The Boston Bruins may have revealed more about Pavel Zacha’s future than they intended during their unsuccessful pursuit of Kirill Marchenko.
According to NHL insider Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic, Zacha’s name surfaced in discussions between Boston and the Columbus Blue Jackets before Marchenko was eventually traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs.
That detail changes the conversation surrounding Zacha. This is no longer just about a player approaching free agency. It’s about a productive NHL centre whose name has already entered trade discussions while his next contract remains unresolved.
The 29-year-old is entering the final season of his four-year, $19 million contract. He carries a $4.75 million salary-cap hit and is coming off a career-best season with 30 goals and 65 points.
What makes this particularly interesting is that Zacha wants to remain in Boston.
For Bruins general manager Don Sweeney, the bigger question might not be whether Zacha can help the team win. It could be whether keeping him at the price of his next contract makes more sense than moving him for another impact player.
And based on what we’ve learned, that decision may already be under serious consideration.
Why Pavel Zacha Entered the Boston Bruins’ Marchenko Trade Talks
The Bruins reportedly explored acquiring Kirill Marchenko before Columbus completed its blockbuster with Toronto on September 28.
The Maple Leafs ultimately acquired Marchenko, Miles Wood and Elvis Merzlikins in a deal that sent Matthew Knies, Steven Lorentz, Emil Andrae and a 2027 second-round pick to Columbus.
Marchenko subsequently signed a six-year extension worth $75 million that begins in 2027-28.
Boston’s interest is understandable. Marchenko scored 27 goals and recorded 67 points last season, giving him the offensive credentials of a potential long-term top-six winger.
But the more revealing part of the Bruins’ involvement was Zacha’s name entering the conversation.
LeBrun reported that the forward came up when the Bruins inquired about Marchenko. That does not establish that Boston made a formal offer involving Zacha, and the exact framework of the discussions has not been publicly confirmed.
Still, the fact that his name was discussed is significant.
Sweeney has shown a willingness to explore major roster changes when the organization believes it can improve its long-term outlook. The Marchenko pursuit suggests Boston is continuing to evaluate significant options rather than limiting itself to smaller adjustments.
My interpretation is that Zacha’s availability may depend less on Boston’s desire to move him and more on the opportunity to acquire a player the organization considers a better long-term fit.
That’s an important distinction. There is a difference between actively shopping a player and being willing to include him in the right conversation.
How Pavel Zacha’s Contract Could Shape the Bruins’ Next Move

Boston Bruins | Regular-season points
According to LeBrun’s reporting, the Bruins experienced some initial sticker shock during extension discussions in June, and there are concerns about how a longer contract would age.
Zacha’s position is understandable.
After producing 30 goals and 65 points in 78 games last season, he has every reason to negotiate a significant raise.
He brings size, versatility, offensive production, and the ability to play centre or left wing. Those qualities are particularly valuable in a market where reliable middle-six centres are not easy to acquire.
However, the Bruins must also consider his age. Zacha will be 30 when his current contract expires, and a lengthy extension could carry considerable risk during its final seasons.
He also holds an eight-team no-trade list, which gives him some control over potential destinations.
In an October 7 interview with WEEI, Zacha acknowledged that he had been unaware of the Columbus discussions until that day. He also reiterated his preference to remain with the Bruins.
That is meaningful, but wanting to stay and agreeing on a contract are two different things.
The Bruins have to determine how much of their future cap space they are prepared to commit to a player whose next agreement would cover much of his early 30s.
Pavel Zacha’s Scoring History Explains His Growing Trade Value
Zacha’s development has not followed a perfectly straight line.
He recorded 59 points in 2023-24 before declining to 47 in 2024-25. Last season, he responded with 30 goals and 65 points, establishing new career highs in both categories.
That three-year progression matters because it demonstrates both the upside Boston would be surrendering and the uncertainty surrounding his next contract.
Would the Bruins be paying for a dependable 50-point centre or for a player capable of producing another 65-point season?
I believe that is the central issue in these negotiations.
Zacha’s best season gives his representatives a powerful argument. But Boston has to evaluate the full body of work, not just the latest statistical peak.
His versatility provides a level of protection against offensive regression. Even if his goal total slips, he can contribute in different roles and help a team manage difficult matchups.
Through his first four games of the 2026-27 season, Zacha had yet to record a point. Head coach Marco Sturm also adjusted his combinations, using Zacha between David Pastrnak and Morgan Geekie during Wednesday’s practice.
I wouldn’t place much weight on a four-game scoring drought. If anything, the opportunity to play with Pastrnak could quickly change the conversation surrounding Zacha’s production.
The Bruins should be evaluating his longer-term contribution, rather than making a contract decision based on the first week of October.
What Would Trading Pavel Zacha Mean for Boston’s Salary Cap?

2026–27 | NHLTradeRumor.com Trade Scenarios
Projected Space After Hypothetical Trade
Calculation: Starting projected cap space ($6,440,361) + Zacha’s removed cap hit ($4,750,000) minus any retained salary. These are simplified scenarios, not confirmed trades. Incoming contracts, roster replacements and daily transactions can change actual cap space. Data snapshot: October 7, 2026. Source: PuckPedia.
Boston enters this situation with financial flexibility, but trading Zacha would provide additional room to reshape the roster.
According to our figures, the Bruins have approximately $6.44 million in projected 2026-27 cap space against the NHL’s $104 million ceiling.
Moving Zacha’s full $4.75 million cap hit without taking money back could theoretically increase that projected space to approximately $11.19 million.
However, that is a simplified calculation. It does not account for an incoming player, replacement roster costs, future transactions or daily cap adjustments.
There is also the possibility of salary retention, depending on the type of transaction and Boston’s objectives.
The financial argument for moving Zacha becomes stronger if the Bruins believe they can use both the trade return and newly available cap space to improve more than one position.
But moving a dependable centre simply to create room would be difficult to justify for a team trying to remain competitive.
NHLTradeRumor.com Trade Value Index: Is Pavel Zacha Worth Moving?
NHLTradeRumor.com Trade Value Index
Pending 2027 UFA | $4.75M AAV
Using our editorial trade-value model, Zacha scores 77 out of 100, placing him in the strong-trade-value category.
That rating considers his recent production, positional versatility, contract efficiency, remaining contractual control and likely appeal to teams seeking help down the middle.
The model is an independent NHLTradeRumor.com assessment, not a reported NHL front-office valuation or a prediction of a specific trade return.
A centre capable of scoring 25 to 30 goals while contributing in multiple situations would attract interest around the league.
However, his pending unrestricted free agency would affect what another organization might surrender without assurances about an extension.
That creates an interesting challenge for Sweeney.
If Boston wants to maximize Zacha’s value, waiting until the trade deadline could be risky. Injuries, changing team needs and contract uncertainty could all alter the market.
On the other hand, another productive season could make him an even more attractive target for a playoff contender.
Will the Boston Bruins Actually Trade Pavel Zacha?
I see three realistic possibilities.
The first is an extension. Zacha wants to remain in Boston, and the Bruins know exactly what he brings. If both sides can compromise on salary and term, an agreement remains entirely possible.
The second is a hockey trade. Boston could revisit discussions involving Zacha if another talented, controllable player becomes available. The Marchenko conversations suggest management is at least willing to consider that possibility.
The third is waiting until closer to the 2027 trade deadline. Boston’s position in the standings could influence whether Zacha becomes part of the club’s playoff plans or a player used to recover valuable assets.
Of those scenarios, I believe an extension or a significant player-for-player trade makes the most sense at this stage.
Boston has legitimate reasons to retain Zacha. His production, size and ability to play centre are difficult to replace, particularly without surrendering additional assets.
However, the Bruins cannot afford to ignore the risk of losing an established contributor in unrestricted free agency without receiving anything in return.
What stands out to me about the Marchenko negotiations is not that Boston missed out on a talented winger. It’s that management was reportedly willing to discuss a player who has become an important part of its own forward group.
That tells us Zacha’s place in Boston’s future may not be as secure as many expected following his breakout campaign.
My prediction: Zacha stays with Boston in the immediate future, but his name will remain part of NHL trade rumors until the Bruins reach a contract agreement or determine their best alternative.
The next meaningful development to watch is whether extension discussions begin making progress.
If those conversations remain stalled while Boston continues exploring major roster changes, this could become one of the more interesting Bruins trade storylines of the season.
For now, the Marchenko deal is complete, and Toronto landed its winger. Zacha remains in Boston.
But the unanswered question is whether those trade discussions were simply an isolated opportunity — or an early sign of a much bigger decision ahead.
