Toronto has officially landed Kirill Marchenko in a massive trade with the Columbus Blue Jackets, sending Matthew Knies, Steven Lorentz, Emil Andrae and a conditional 2027 second-round pick to Columbus. Toronto receives Marchenko, Miles Wood and Elvis Merzlikins. Marchenko also agreed to a six-year, $75-million extension carrying a $12.5 million annual cap hit beginning in 2027-28.

That story is particularly important because it provides a clean example of an NHL trade rumor becoming confirmed news. Toronto and Columbus were reportedly deep in talks Monday afternoon; by the roster deadline, the blockbuster was completed.

But Marchenko is not the only major name creating trade chatter. Connor Hellebuyck’s future remains unresolved, and fresh reporting suggests the Carolina Hurricanes may now be pushing hardest to unlock a deal with Winnipeg.

Add a serious Brock Faber injury, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins missing Edmonton’s opener and five games launching the regular season, and September 29 has already become one of the busiest NHL news days of the fall.

Maple Leafs Complete Kirill Marchenko Blockbuster

Toronto finally made the aggressive top-six move that had been building for weeks.

The Maple Leafs acquired Marchenko, Wood and Merzlikins from Columbus. Heading the other direction are Knies, Lorentz, Andrae and a conditional 2027 second-round selection. Marchenko produced 27 goals and 40 assists for 67 points in 76 games last season and has led Columbus in goals in each of the past three seasons.

The most fascinating part of this deal isn’t simply the player swap. It is Toronto’s willingness to trade a 23-year-old power forward in Knies who had 66 points last season and remains signed at $7.75 million annually.

Maple Leafs GM John Chayka made clear Tuesday that Toronto viewed Marchenko as the higher-impact offensive player. Marchenko’s right-handed shot immediately adds another dimension to Toronto’s top six and power play.

From my perspective, that is the key to understanding this trade. Toronto didn’t make the deal because Knies had disappointed them. They made it because management believes Marchenko can become a legitimate game-breaking offensive winger during the prime years of his career.

And there is one more major storyline: Marchenko carries only a $3.85 million cap hit this season before his new $12.5 million extension kicks in next year.

PuckPedia calculates the transaction as approximately $128,000 in additional current-year cap commitment for Toronto, meaning this was essentially a cap-neutral blockbuster for 2026-27.

Marchenko gets the slight edge in this model because of his established offensive ceiling and exceptional $3.85 million cap hit this season. Knies closes much of that gap because he is three years younger, signed long-term at $7.75 million and brings a heavier physical element.

Connor Hellebuyck Trade Rumors Shift Toward Carolina

The other enormous NHL rumor remains Connor Hellebuyck.

Elliotte Friedman reported Tuesday that Carolina is currently the most motivated pursuer of the Winnipeg Jets goaltender. Alexander Nikishin remains connected to the discussions, but Friedman’s reporting indicates Nikishin’s willingness to sign in Winnipeg has complicated a direct transaction.

That creates the possibility of a three-team construction in which Carolina moves Nikishin elsewhere and redirects assets Winnipeg values more highly.

Friedman also reported that Hellebuyck initially preferred Florida, while Buffalo came particularly close to completing a deal. Anaheim and Utah were among the other teams that explored the situation.

My read is that Winnipeg still controls the process. Hellebuyck may want resolution, but the Jets have very little incentive to accept a package they view as inadequate. A franchise goaltender is extremely difficult to replace, and Winnipeg appears prepared to wait until another club meets its valuation.

The wild card could be Clay Stevenson. Friedman reports Winnipeg may become more flexible about demanding a goalie back if Stevenson convinces management he can handle a meaningful NHL role.

That is the piece I would watch closely over the next several days.

Marchenko’s 67 points in 76 games works out to approximately 0.88 points per game, compared with Knies’ 66 in 79, or roughly 0.84 points per game. The separation is small, which underlines how much Toronto’s evaluation appears to be based on Marchenko’s offensive ceiling and stylistic fit rather than raw point totals alone.

Brock Faber Out Indefinitely After Surgery

Minnesota received difficult news Tuesday when the Wild announced Brock Faber underwent surgery for a fractured skull suffered after being hit in the head by a puck during Friday’s preseason game.

There is currently no timetable for his return. General manager Bill Guerin said Minnesota will follow its doctors’ guidance before establishing one.

This is a major loss for the Wild because Faber plays significant minutes in virtually every situation. From a hockey perspective, Minnesota now has to redistribute difficult defensive assignments while avoiding overloading the rest of its blue line.

More importantly, this is clearly a situation where the player’s long-term health takes priority over any projected return date.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins Will Miss Edmonton’s Opener

The Edmonton Oilers will begin their season without Ryan Nugent-Hopkins because of a lower-body injury sustained in Monday’s practice.

Nugent-Hopkins had spent camp centring Edmonton’s second line. His absence is expected to force Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl onto separate lines against Vancouver rather than keeping the superstars together as they had been during training camp.

That gives tonight’s Canucks-Oilers matchup an immediate tactical storyline.

Thomas Chabot Named Ottawa Senators Captain

Ottawa also made major leadership news Tuesday, naming Thomas Chabot the 11th captain in Senators history.

The 29-year-old defenceman is the organization’s longest-tenured current player and replaces Brady Tkachuk following Tkachuk’s move to Florida.

For Ottawa, choosing Chabot gives the room an experienced player who has lived through virtually every stage of the organization’s recent rebuild.

Tuesday’s schedule begins with Florida visiting the defending Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes at 5 p.m. ET. Montreal visits Toronto at 7 p.m., the Rangers face Boston at 8 p.m., Vancouver plays Edmonton at 10 p.m., and Chicago closes the night in Vegas at 10:30 p.m. ET.
