Toronto has reportedly received permission to speak with Marchenko’s camp about a contract extension as trade discussions intensify.
The biggest story in today’s NHL News and NHL Rumors and NHL Scores roundup has changed dramatically. The Toronto Maple Leafs and Columbus Blue Jackets are now in advanced discussions on a trade involving star winger Kirill Marchenko, and perhaps the most significant development is that Toronto has reportedly been given permission to speak with Marchenko’s representatives about a contract extension.
That does not mean a trade is officially completed. But permission to negotiate a long-term contract usually represents a significant stage in negotiations because Toronto can determine whether Marchenko is willing to make a long-term commitment before paying Columbus’ substantial asking price.
TSN is also reporting that Matthew Knies is involved in the proposed trade and that Columbus and Toronto are working toward completing the deal. If that report proves accurate, this has moved well beyond the speculative trade chatter that surrounded Marchenko throughout the summer.
For me, that is the key distinction. We are no longer discussing whether Toronto has interest in Marchenko. The question has become whether general manager John Chayka can finish the trade, agree on an extension and make all of the salary-cap pieces fit before the Maple Leafs open their season against Montreal.
Kirill Marchenko Trade Talks Suddenly Become NHL’s Biggest Opening-Night Story
Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman reported that Toronto and Columbus are deep in discussions regarding Marchenko. The 26-year-old winger is coming off an excellent season in which he recorded 27 goals and 40 assists for 67 points in 76 games. He has also produced 58 goals and 141 points over the last two seasons.
Marchenko carries a very manageable $3.85-million cap hit for 2026-27 before becoming a restricted free agent with arbitration rights next summer. That contract situation helps explain why negotiating permission matters so much. Toronto would not simply be trading for one season of Marchenko. If the Maple Leafs can negotiate an extension first, they would potentially be acquiring a prime-aged top-six winger for several seasons.
Matthew Knies Reportedly Involved in Marchenko Trade
The most fascinating piece of the developing story is Matthew Knies. The Fourth Period reported Monday afternoon that the trade being finalized involves Knies going to Columbus. That part of the transaction should still be treated as a report rather than an official trade until the Maple Leafs and Blue Jackets announce it.
But it makes considerable hockey and salary-cap sense from Columbus’ perspective. Knies is only 23 and produced 23 goals and 43 assists for 66 points in 79 games last season. More importantly, he is already signed through 2030-31 at a $7.75-million cap hit. Columbus has consistently been reported to want an established NHL player rather than a package built primarily around prospects and draft picks.
Knies would certainly satisfy that requirement. From Toronto’s perspective, however, this would be a fascinating gamble. Marchenko scored four more goals last season, finished with one more point and is an established right-shot scoring winger. Knies is three years younger, already locked into a long-term contract and brings a heavy physical element to Toronto’s top six.
This would not be Toronto trading spare assets for Marchenko. It would be one premium young forward potentially being exchanged for another.

That calculation reveals another reason a Knies-for-Marchenko framework is intriguing. We currently list Toronto at approximately $3.81 million over the $104-million cap. Knies carries a $7.75-million cap hit while Marchenko costs $3.85 million this season. A simple one-for-one exchange would therefore create exactly $3.9 million of additional room and put Toronto almost directly on the cap ceiling. That does not mean the transaction will ultimately be one-for-one. Friedman has also discussed the possibility that Columbus could try to attach another contract in Marchenko talks. That means Toronto’s final cap picture cannot be calculated until the complete trade is known.
What a Marchenko Extension Could Cost Toronto
This may actually be the most important part of the negotiations. Marchenko’s $3.85-million salary is extremely attractive for this season, but that bargain disappears next summer. With 58 goals and 141 points over his last 155 games, Marchenko has positioned himself for a significant raise. Toronto therefore has to determine two prices simultaneously: What will Columbus require in the trade? And: What will Marchenko require to sign long term? If Toronto is willing to move a player as valuable as Knies, getting clarity on Marchenko’s next contract before completing the transaction would be crucial. That’s why the reported permission to negotiate an extension might ultimately be the biggest signal that this trade has become serious.

The Marchenko developments overshadowed another major NHL story Monday when the Boston Bruins officially named David Pastrnak the 28th captain in franchise history. Pastrnak takes over the leadership role following the departure of Brad Marchand and enters the season as the undisputed face of the Bruins franchise. Pastrnak has accumulated 933 regular-season points with Boston and has developed from an elite offensive winger into the player around whom the organization is now building its next chapter. The timing is significant because Boston has also been mentioned among the teams that explored the Marchenko market. For the Bruins, however, Monday became about officially handing the organization to Pastrnak.
