Gavin McKenna of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Brad Marchand of the Florida Panthers featured in the latest NHL news and NHL rumors for October 7, 2026.
Gavin McKenna and Brad Marchand headline the latest NHL news, with McKenna scoring his first NHL goal and Marchand’s injury adding another concern for the Florida Panthers.

The Florida Panthers escaped Los Angeles with a 2-1 win Tuesday night, but the biggest NHL news coming out of the game may have nothing to do with the final score.

Brad Marchand suffered an apparent lower-body injury late in the second period and had to be helped off the ice. Florida says another update on Marchand is expected Thursday. That is especially significant because captain Aleksander Barkov is already expected to miss six to eight weeks with a lower-body injury.

That immediately raises the question NHL fans always ask: does Florida now enter the trade market?

My read is that the Panthers may explore depth, but the Dylan Larkin blockbuster speculation suddenly looks much less realistic than it did a few days ago. Pierre LeBrun reported that there was not much validity to the Larkin-to-Florida speculation in the first place, and Barkov is expected back this season. Florida cannot simply treat his entire contract as permanent spending room.

That makes Marchand’s next medical update one of the biggest things to watch around the NHL.

NHL News Today: McKenna, Larkin and Marchand Drive the Biggest Storylines

Gavin McKenna finally had his breakthrough night for the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The No. 1 pick in the 2026 NHL Draft recorded his first NHL assist on a John Tavares goal before scoring his first NHL goal later in the second period. Toronto eventually erased a 3-0 deficit and defeated Nashville 5-4 in overtime. Auston Matthews delivered the winner with only 14 seconds remaining and finished with a goal and three assists.

That is the type of night that can settle a young star down quickly. McKenna had gone pointless through his first three NHL games, which naturally created noise in Toronto. One goal doesn’t establish an NHL career, but getting that milestone out of the way this early should allow him to play without every shift being viewed through the lens of when his first point is coming.

Detroit had its own major storyline.

Dylan Larkin returned from an upper-body injury and produced a goal and an assist as the Red Wings defeated Ottawa 5-3 for their first victory of the season. Alex DeBrincat scored twice and added an assist, while Lucas Raymond collected three assists.

The important part from a trade perspective is that Larkin playing well does not erase what happened during the offseason. His future remains one of the NHL’s most fascinating situations. In fact, productive games only strengthen Detroit’s ability to be patient rather than moving its top centre at a discount.

Patrick Kane also received an emotional welcome back to United Center in his first home appearance since returning to Chicago. The Blackhawks beat St. Louis 4-2 for their first victory of the season, with Anton Frondell recording a goal and an assist.

And tonight brings another major milestone: Alex Ovechkin is scheduled to face Sidney Crosby and the Penguins in what will be Ovechkin’s final Capitals home opener after announcing this will be his final NHL season.

NHL Rumors Today: Edvinsson, Hellebuyck and Edmonton’s Mystery Center

Simon Edvinsson remains one of the most important names to watch.

Darren Dreger reported there has been no breakthrough in negotiations between Detroit and the restricted free-agent defenseman, although discussions remain active. The Red Wings are also listening when teams call about Edvinsson. Anaheim, Columbus and San Jose have all been floated as potential fits in subsequent speculation.

That does not mean Detroit has decided to trade him. My interpretation is almost the opposite: teams are testing whether Detroit’s contract stalemate can be turned into an opportunity. Unless another club puts a premium asset package on the table, re-signing Edvinsson remains the logical outcome.

Connor Hellebuyck is another story that refuses to disappear. LeBrun has pushed back hard on Edmonton speculation, reporting that Hellebuyck isn’t expected to approve a move to another Canadian team. Carolina and Buffalo continue to be mentioned among the most established potential destinations.

Edmonton could still be shopping for help down the middle instead.

Dreger recently indicated that the Oilers have been pursuing an unidentified young Eastern Conference centre with upside. That has led to speculation surrounding Boston’s Matthew Poitras and Montreal’s Kirby Dach. Poitras is particularly interesting because he’s a 22-year-old right-shot centre carrying only an $850,000 cap hit this season. There is still no confirmation, however, that he is actually the player Edmonton is pursuing.

Rumor analysis should separate what an insider has actually reported from the names subsequently connected through deduction.

NHLTradeRumor.com Rumor Heat Index

Editorial indicator — not a reported probability

Simon Edvinsson Trade78/100
Contract stalemate continues and Detroit is listening to trade interest, although re-signing him remains a realistic outcome.
Connor Hellebuyck Trade72/100
The holdout keeps trade pressure high, but reported destination preferences sharply narrow the market.
Matthew Poitras to Edmonton55/100
The player profile fits Edmonton’s reported search, but Poitras has not been confirmed as the unnamed target.
Dylan Larkin to Florida12/100
Current reporting and Florida’s cap situation both work against a blockbuster involving Larkin.

NHLTradeRumor.com Cap Reality Check: Dylan Larkin to Florida

Here’s where the numbers make the Florida speculation difficult.

We currently list Florida with approximately $2.25 million in current cap space, while Larkin carries an $8.7 million cap hit through 2030-31. On a simple full-cap-hit comparison, that’s a gap of roughly $6.45 million before accounting for outgoing contracts, salary retention, accrued space, prorating or additional LTIR mechanics.

NHLTradeRumor.com Cap Fit Calculator

Could Florida Fit Dylan Larkin?

Florida Current Cap Space $2.25M
Larkin Cap Hit $8.70M
Simple Cap Gap ≈ $6.45M
Reality check: Florida would need significant additional flexibility through outgoing salary, retention or other cap mechanisms to absorb Larkin’s full cap hit. In-season prorating and LTIR accounting can change the exact trade-day calculation.

That’s why I would classify a Larkin-to-Florida move as extremely cold right now. The Panthers would have to solve both the acquisition cost and the money.

The more realistic NHL trade stories remain Detroit’s Edvinsson negotiations, Hellebuyck’s destination list and Edmonton’s continuing search for another young centre.
