The Boston Bruins‘ interest in acquiring Noah Hanifin from the Calgary Flames is a developing story that has caught the attention of NHL insiders and fans alike.

According to TSN’s Pierre LeBrun, there’s a possibility of a sign-and-trade scenario for Hanifin that could entice Bruins GM Don Sweeney. At 26 years old, Hanifin is nearing unrestricted free agent status, and the Flames were reportedly close to securing him with an eight-year contract extension worth $7.5 million annually. However, Hanifin’s desire to see how the season unfolds led to the Flames withdrawing the offer.

Bruins’ Interest in Noah Hanifin Trade Gains Momentum

For the Bruins, Hanifin would be a valuable addition. Sweeney has shown interest in him for a while, and the Bruins will have the cap space to accommodate Hanifin’s contract after this season. However, they face a challenge in fitting his current $4.95 million annual average value (AAV) under their salary cap.

To make the trade feasible this season, the Bruins would need to offload a similar salary, either in the trade for Hanifin or through another transaction.

As for Hanifin’s performance in the 2023-2024 season, he has been impressive with the Calgary Flames. He has accumulated 11 points, including 42 shots on net and 32 blocked shots, over 23 games. His plus+3 rating further underscores his effectiveness on the ice.

The Flames’ standing in the Western Conference also plays a role in any potential trade. As of now, they are 10-10-3, with a total of 23 points, placing them at 4th in the West, Pacific Division. This positioning might influence their decision-making regarding trades and player contracts.
