On August 1, 1961, hockey history was made when Rod Gilbert signed his first NHL contract with the New York Rangers. Just a month after turning 20, Gilbert joined the Rangers following an impressive season with the Guelph Royals, where he scored 103 points in 47 games.
Gilbert made his NHL debut on November 27, 1960, assisting on a crucial goal that led to a tie with the Chicago Blackhawks. Despite undergoing back surgery, he showcased his talent in the 1961-62 Stanley Cup Playoffs, cementing his place as a full-time NHL player by 1962-63.
Rod Gilbert went on to become a Rangers legend, retiring in 1977 with 406 goals and 1,021 points. His remarkable career earned him a spot in the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1982.
