The latest NHL news for Saturday, August 8, 2026 is being driven by three very different offseason storylines: the continued uncertainty surrounding Quinn Hughes and the Minnesota Wild, one of the boldest contracts of the summer involving Ville Koivunen and the Pittsburgh Penguins, and a well-earned franchise honor coming for Anze Kopitar in Los Angeles.
And for me, the Hughes situation remains the one to watch.
The Wild gave up an enormous package to acquire Hughes from Vancouver last December, yet August has arrived without the superstar defenseman signing an extension. That does not mean Hughes is preparing to leave Minnesota, but every week without a contract gives the rumor mill more fuel.
Hughes previously said he would “definitely be open to re-signing” with Minnesota, while Wild owner Craig Leipold went even further in June, saying the organization was going to re-sign him.
Yet as of August 8, there still isn’t a new contract to announce.
Quinn Hughes Contract Silence Keeps NHL Rumors Alive
Hughes remains arguably the most fascinating contract situation in hockey because Minnesota has already demonstrated how valuable it believes he is.
After arriving from Vancouver, Hughes produced 53 points in 48 regular-season games for the Wild before adding 15 points in 11 playoff games while averaging an incredible 30:57 of ice time during the postseason.
Those aren’t simply No. 1 defenseman numbers. That’s franchise-altering production.
The most important detail, in my opinion, may be term rather than money.
Leipold previously acknowledged Minnesota would prefer a longer commitment while suggesting Hughes could prefer something shorter. That matters because a shorter contract could potentially line Hughes up with future free-agency opportunities involving his brothers, Jack and Luke Hughes.
That doesn’t mean a move to the New Jersey Devils is coming, far from it. But it explains why Minnesota might not simply be able to place a blank cheque in front of Hughes and get an eight-year signature.
Saturday’s NHL rumor cycle again has Hughes taking centre stage, with the lack of a completed extension continuing to generate questions around Minnesota.
My read remains that Minnesota is the favourite to keep Hughes. But until the contract is signed, the Devils speculation isn’t disappearing.
Penguins’ Ville Koivunen Contract Is a Fascinating Salary-Cap Gamble
The other NHL news story I keep coming back to is Pittsburgh’s extraordinary bet on Ville Koivunen.
The Penguins signed the 23-year-old forward to an eight-year, $32 million contract carrying a $4 million annual cap hit. Koivunen has played only 47 NHL games and has recorded 14 career points. Last season, he produced just two goals and seven points in 39 NHL games, although his AHL production was much stronger at 41 points in 34 games.
On the surface, eight years looks extreme.
But here’s where the numbers become interesting.
The NHL salary-cap ceiling is $104 million for 2026-27, meaning Koivunen’s $4 million hit represents roughly 3.85% of the current ceiling. The cap is already projected at $113.5 million in 2027-28, which would reduce that $4 million to roughly 3.5% of the cap.
That’s why I wouldn’t automatically label this a bad contract.
It’s a calculated development bet.
If Koivunen becomes a legitimate 40-to-50-point middle-six forward, Pittsburgh could have an extremely team-friendly contract for most of his prime. If his NHL offence never develops, eight years suddenly feels very long.
Even more fascinating is that Pittsburgh’s crowded forward group means Koivunen apparently still has something to prove at training camp despite receiving an eight-year commitment.
That makes this one of the contracts I’ll be watching most closely during the 2026-27 season.
Anze Kopitar Will Get the Ultimate Los Angeles Kings Honor
There is also significant NHL news coming out of Los Angeles.
The Kings announced that Anze Kopitar’s No. 11 will be retired and a statue of the longtime captain will be unveiled outside Crypto.com Arena on February 24, 2027, ahead of a game against the Montreal Canadiens.
Few players have ever been more deserving of that combination of honors.
Kopitar retired following the 2025-26 season after spending all 20 of his NHL seasons with Los Angeles. He finished his remarkable career with 1,521 games, 864 assists and 1,316 points, all franchise records, along with 452 goals and two Stanley Cup championships.
This also provides a nice example of an earlier report becoming reality.
Kopitar announced before last season that 2025-26 would be his final NHL campaign. He followed through on that decision, played his final game in April, and now the Kings are moving quickly to permanently recognize his impact on the franchise.
From my perspective, Kopitar belongs in the conversation as the greatest King ever. Wayne Gretzky was the greatest player to wear the uniform, but Kopitar’s combination of longevity, championships, leadership, two-way excellence and spending his entire career in Los Angeles gives him a uniquely strong franchise legacy.
What Today’s NHL News Is Really Telling Us
The NHL calendar may be in its quieter August stretch, but these stories provide a fascinating glimpse into how teams are thinking.
Minnesota is attempting to keep one of the world’s best defensemen without compromising its future flexibility. Pittsburgh is betting that locking up a young player before his production explodes can create major long-term value. Los Angeles, meanwhile, is officially closing the book on one of the greatest careers in franchise history.
The Hughes story has the greatest potential to change the NHL landscape.
If Minnesota announces an extension, much of the speculation disappears overnight. If training camp approaches without one, every quote from Bill Guerin, Hughes or anyone connected to New Jersey will be dissected.
That’s why Hughes remains near the top of my NHL news watch list as the offseason continues.
