Alexis Lafrenière is not reportedly being actively shopped by the New York Rangers today, but the latest comments from NHL insider David Pagnotta have put his name squarely back into the trade-rumor conversation.
The important part is the condition attached to the speculation. Pagnotta indicated that if the first quarter of the Rangers’ season goes badly, significant names could begin entering conversations around the league, including Lafrenière, Adam Fox and even Igor Shesterkin. In other words, this is not reporting that general manager Chris Drury is currently negotiating a Lafrenière trade. It is a warning about what could happen if New York’s season begins to unravel.
And that distinction matters.
Lafrenière is only 24, just produced 24 goals and 57 points in 82 games, and remains signed through 2031-32 at a $7.45 million cap hit. He is also receiving significant opportunities in training camp, including work on New York’s top power-play unit. Those are hardly signs of a player being pushed out the door.
But if the Rangers stumble? That is when this story could become much more interesting.
Why Alexis Lafrenière Keeps Appearing in New York Rangers Trade Rumors
This is not the first time Lafrenière’s name has surfaced.
Earlier in September, Pagnotta said the winger’s name had been “bandied about” and suggested New York’s start could determine whether those conversations return. The September 22 comments therefore strengthen an existing storyline rather than creating an entirely new one.
There was also legitimate interest before the 2026 NHL Draft. Lafrenière appeared on Daily Faceoff’s trade board after finishing last season strongly, including a 25-point stretch over 25 games following the Olympic break.
That is what makes this situation fascinating.
Lafrenière is no longer an inexpensive prospect waiting to establish himself. He is entering the second season of a seven-year, $52.15 million contract. The Rangers made a substantial commitment when they signed him, and his $7.45 million annual cap hit runs through 2031-32.
My view is that this actually increases the possibility of meaningful trade conversations if New York decides another major roster reset is required.
A rebuilding club probably would not view Lafrenière as a rental. A contender would not be acquiring him for one playoff run. Any team pursuing him would be acquiring six remaining seasons of control after this year at a fixed cap number.
With the NHL salary ceiling continuing to rise, that certainty has value.
What a Lafrenière Trade Would Really Mean for the Rangers
If Chris Drury eventually moves Lafrenière, I do not believe the motivation would simply be clearing his salary.
The Rangers currently project to have only about $1.277,000 in cap space, so moving Lafrenière without taking significant salary back would obviously create flexibility. But the bigger question would be what New York receives in return.
That $8.727 million figure is not a prediction. It demonstrates why Lafrenière represents something more valuable than an ordinary trade chip: moving him could simultaneously create cap flexibility and generate a significant hockey return.
But there is another side to the argument.
The Rangers are currently giving Lafrenière important offensive opportunities. Training-camp work has included Lafrenière alongside Mika Zibanejad and Gabe Perreault, while he has also been used with the Rangers’ primary power-play group.
That suggests New York is still giving him every opportunity to become a major piece of this roster.
For me, the first 20 games could tell us far more than anything happening in September.
If Lafrenière starts producing consistently and the Rangers are winning, this speculation could disappear quickly. If New York struggles and Lafrenière’s production becomes inconsistent, the conversation changes because Drury would possess one of the more intriguing young trade assets in the league.
An 85 rating does not mean another club should simply offer an “85-level package.” The purpose of the index is to show where Lafrenière sits relative to the type of assets normally discussed in major NHL trades.
His age is arguably the biggest factor.
Lafrenière will turn 25 in October. A team trading for him would not be betting on a player approaching the end of his prime. It would be acquiring a player who could conceivably deliver his best seasons during the contract it is inheriting.
That makes a hypothetical Rangers asking price difficult to construct.
A package consisting only of draft picks would not make much sense to me unless New York had made the decision to enter a deeper rebuild. If Drury still wants to compete immediately, I would expect any serious Lafrenière conversation to involve a significant NHL player, a high-level young asset, or a package that creates the flexibility for another major move.
There is also no reason for New York to sell low.
Lafrenière scored 24 goals and 57 points last season, and his underlying numbers were encouraging as well. PuckPedia lists him with a 53.0 percent expected-goals share at five-on-five and a positive relative expected-goals rate.
Those are not the numbers of a player a team needs to unload.
They are the numbers of a player other general managers would reasonably call about.
Are the New York Rangers Actually Preparing to Trade Alexis Lafrenière?
Right now, I would separate trade possibility from trade probability.
Pagnotta’s comments make Lafrenière worth monitoring. They do not establish that the Rangers are currently shopping him or that a deal is close.
In fact, what New York is doing on the ice points in the opposite direction. Lafrenière is getting important minutes and an opportunity to help drive the Rangers offense.
That can change quickly in the NHL.
If the Rangers are sitting near the bottom of the Eastern Conference after 20 games, every major decision Chris Drury has made will come under scrutiny. At that point, names that seem difficult to imagine moving today could become legitimate topics around the league.
And that is why Lafrenière is worth watching.
He possesses exactly the combination that makes NHL trade rumors explode: name recognition, first-overall pedigree, production, age, contract control and legitimate upside.
My read heading into the season is simple: the Rangers should not be looking for an excuse to trade Alexis Lafrenière. Another team should have to give them a reason they cannot say no.
Until that happens, Lafrenière remains far more useful to New York on the ice.
But if the Rangers stumble badly during the opening quarter, Pagnotta’s warning from September may suddenly look much more significant.
