As the 2025 NHL offseason approaches, Alexis Lafreniere rumors are once again circulating across the league. Once billed as a future superstar after being selected first overall in the 2020 NHL Draft, Lafreniere’s development has fallen short of expectations. With the New York Rangers facing a cap crunch and pressure to remain contenders, is it finally time to move on from the 23-year-old winger?
According to Mollie Walker of the New York Post, Lafreniere’s name hasn’t been in the media spotlight as much as others, partly because he’s still considered one of the younger players on the roster. However, Walker did note that Lafreniere has caught criticism since signing a seven-year contract extension last October, especially in light of his continued struggles to produce at an elite level.
With no trade protection in his contract until the 2026-27 season, general manager Chris Drury has flexibility if he chooses to explore a trade this summer. Walker emphasized that it wouldn’t be far-fetched to consider a deal involving Lafreniere, especially if the return addresses immediate roster needs.
Could the Rangers Trade Alexis Lafreniere in a Bold Offseason Move?
While veteran Chris Kreider remains the likelier candidate for a cost-cutting trade, Lafreniere could draw more interest across the league given his age, draft pedigree, and potential. Trading Lafreniere might bring in a higher-impact return compared to Kreider, particularly if a team is willing to bet on untapped upside.
There has been longstanding interest from the Vancouver Canucks, and a fresh trade scenario could be revisited this offseason. The Canucks are seeking a long-term answer in their top six, and a deal involving NHL-ready talent or draft picks might entice Drury if he feels Lafreniere has plateaued in New York.
My Take: I believe Drury will explore all avenues this offseason. If Lafreniere doesn’t make significant strides by next season’s midpoint, trade talks will intensify. But if the right offer comes in now — especially from a team like Vancouver — the Rangers might pull the trigger earlier than expected.
