Alex Ovechkin sets an NHL record
Alex Ovechkin has set a new NHL record by breaking Gordie Howe's record for most goals scored with one franchise.

Alex Ovechkin has not broken Wayne Gretzky’s all-time goals scored record but he took down another legend in Gordie Howe.

Ovechkin broke a tie with Detroit Red Wings legend Gordie Howe for setting the NHL record for most goals scored with one franchise.

How many goals did Alex Ovechkin score to break the NHL record?

Ovechkin notched his 787th career goal with the Washington Capitals to break the record. Howe scored 786 goals in 1,687 games with the Red Wings from 1946-1971.

The next question on every hockey fan’s mind is will Alex Ovechkin break Wayne Gretzky’s all-time goals record before he retires. Most people think he will if he stays healthy.

“It’s the way that Ovechkin has been scoring, and the pace that he does it. He’s so big, so strong and so powerful.”

Mark Howe, NHL hall of famer

Ovechkin, 37, was drafted 1st overall by the Washington Capitals in the 1st round of the 2004 NHL entry draft. Currently over a career that spans 18 seasons, he has a total 1420 points in 1286 games played, and 141 playoffs points in 147 games played.
