Aleksander Barkov did not record a single NHL point last season, but that stat line tells fantasy hockey managers almost nothing about what to expect in 2026-27.

The Florida Panthers captain missed the entire 2025-26 season after suffering ACL and MCL injuries during training camp. Now healthy again, Barkov returns to a Panthers lineup that might actually give him more offensive weapons than he had before the injury.

My projection for Barkov is 26 goals, 59 assists and 85 points in 2026-27.

That puts him slightly above NHL.com’s current 83-point projection, and there’s a reason I’m willing to lean higher. Barkov isn’t simply returning to Sam Reinhart and Matthew Tkachuk. Florida added Brady Tkachuk, giving Barkov another elite combination of finishing ability, physicality and net-front presence. Florida’s projected top line has Brady Tkachuk alongside Barkov and Reinhart.

For fantasy managers worried about Barkov’s knee, there is already encouraging evidence. He returned to meaningful competition at the 2026 IIHF World Championship and recorded three goals and eight assists for 11 points in 10 games while helping Finland win gold.

Why Aleksander Barkov Can Rebound With the Florida Panthers

Before the injury, Barkov remained one of hockey’s most reliable point-per-game-calibre centres.

He produced 23 goals and 57 assists for 80 points in 73 games in 2023-24, followed by 20 goals and 51 assists for 71 points in only 67 games in 2024-25. That works out to more than a point per game in each season.

That consistency matters when projecting a player returning from a major injury.

I’m not projecting Barkov to suddenly chase 100 points. At age 31 and coming off major knee surgery, expecting him to play every game and establish career highs would be unnecessarily aggressive.

But an 85-point season does not require a career year.

If Barkov plays approximately 76 games, he would need to average roughly 1.12 points per game to reach my projection. That’s within striking distance of his established production, especially considering the offensive talent Florida can put around him.

The biggest question isn’t whether Barkov can still create offence. It’s how many games he’ll play.

Barkov’s Power-Play Ceiling Could Decide His Fantasy Value

This is where the 2026-27 Panthers become especially interesting.

NHL.com projects Florida’s first power-play group to include Aleksander Barkov, Brady Tkachuk, Matthew Tkachuk and Sam Reinhart. The fifth position can evolve through camp and the season, with Florida owning several legitimate point options on defence, including Aaron Ekblad.

Imagine the matchup problems that group creates.

Brady and Matthew Tkachuk can both operate around the crease and recover loose pucks. Reinhart has developed into one of the NHL’s most dangerous special-teams scorers. Barkov can operate as the distributor, bumper option or downhill attacking threat.

For fantasy purposes, I’m particularly interested in Barkov’s assist ceiling.

With that many finishers around him, I see a realistic path toward approximately 59 assists, with 60-plus certainly possible if he stays healthy for most of the schedule.

2026-27 projected games: 76
Projected goals: 26
Projected assists: 59
Projected points: 85
Projected points per game: 1.12
Fantasy outlook: High-end fantasy centre with injury-related draft discount potential

The important distinction is floor versus ceiling.

NHL.com’s current safe projection is 83 points. My model lands at 85, but I believe Barkov’s ceiling moves closer to 90 points if he approaches 80 games and receives consistent PP1 deployment with Florida’s elite forwards.

The downside is straightforward: Barkov hasn’t played an NHL regular-season game since undergoing major knee surgery. Fantasy managers shouldn’t completely erase that risk simply because he looked strong internationally.

But his performance at the World Championship makes this different from projecting a player who hasn’t tested the repaired knee in meaningful competition.

Barkov already did.

And he produced.

That’s why I would be comfortable targeting Aleksander Barkov when other fantasy managers begin passing on him because of last season’s zero beside his name.
