Zach Werenski skating for the Columbus Blue Jackets as NHL trade rumors continue to surround his future in Columbus.
Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Zach Werenski skates with the puck as questions continue about his long-term future, contract situation and potential place in NHL trade rumors.

The Columbus Blue Jackets opened the 2026-27 season with an impressive 6-3 victory over the Buffalo Sabres, Matthew Knies exploded for three points in his Columbus debut, and Zach Werenski quietly added two assists of his own. On the ice, the Blue Jackets looked like a team ready to move forward. Off the ice, however, one unanswered question continues to hang over the organization: why isn’t the reigning Norris Trophy winner wearing the captain’s “C”?

Columbus is officially beginning the season without a captain, and that decision becomes more interesting when placed beside everything that happened with Werenski this summer. Sportsnet reported in July that the Blue Jackets and Dallas Stars had reached a verbal agreement on a trade involving Werenski, with Thomas Harley as the centrepiece going back to Columbus. Werenski used his full no-move clause to stop the deal.

That does not mean another Zach Werenski trade is imminent. But after a summer in which he came remarkably close to changing teams, leaving the captaincy vacant allows Columbus to keep every option open.

And that’s what makes this one of the most fascinating Columbus Blue Jackets trade rumors to watch.

Why the Blue Jackets’ Captaincy Decision Matters for Zach Werenski

NHL.com lists Columbus as one of only three teams beginning the season without a captain, along with Detroit and Vancouver. Werenski would appear to have the résumé for the job. He has spent his entire NHL career with the franchise, is already an alternate captain and just won the 2026 Norris Trophy as the NHL’s top defenseman.

Werenski produced 22 goals and 81 points in 75 games last season, averaged 26:37 of ice time and became the first player in Blue Jackets history to win the Norris Trophy. He has now produced consecutive 80-point seasons from the blue line.

From my perspective, that is what makes the captaincy decision noteworthy.

If this were purely about identifying the most accomplished player, Werenski would be an obvious candidate. But captaincy decisions are also about organizational direction and long-term stability. Columbus does not necessarily need to make that commitment today, especially when Werenski’s future beyond his current contract remains unresolved.

The Hockey News raised that same possibility Thursday night, interpreting the vacant captaincy as potentially connected to the uncertainty surrounding Werenski’s long-term future. Importantly, the Blue Jackets themselves have not publicly said they left the captaincy vacant because they intend to trade him.

The better interpretation is that Columbus has avoided making a decision it doesn’t have to make yet.

Zach Werenski’s Contract Is Where This Gets Interesting

Werenski carries a $9.583 million cap hit through the 2027-28 season, after which he can become an unrestricted free agent. He has a full no-move clause this season, while his protection changes to a modified trade clause for 2027-28.

That contract timeline is critical.

On July 1 Columbus and Dallas had a verbal agreement for a Werenski trade before the defenseman blocked it. Later that same day, general manager Don Waddell and Werenski released statements attempting to settle the situation. Werenski said: “I want to win and I want to do that in Columbus.”

The immediate trade speculation cooled.

But it never completely disappeared.

In September, Werenski acknowledged that himself, telling Sportsnet he expected the speculation to “kick up again” until there is clarity surrounding his next contract.

That makes this different from a manufactured trade rumor. Columbus has already explored a trade. A deal was reportedly agreed to in principle. Werenski stopped it. He remained with the Blue Jackets and has publicly expressed his desire to win there.

All of those things can be true simultaneously.

Zach Werenski: Three-Year Scoring Trend

2023-2457 Points
2024-2582 Points
2025-2681 Points

Werenski has developed from an elite offensive defenseman into one of the NHL’s premier all-around blue-liners.

The production trend reinforces why Columbus cannot treat Werenski like a conventional trade asset. His 57 points in 2023-24 jumped to 82 in 2024-25 before another 81-point performance last season. NHL.com’s official statistics also show that Werenski has accumulated 465 points through 642 career games.

He’s not simply Columbus’ best defenseman. He is a player capable of fundamentally changing the construction of another team’s blue line.

9.21% Share of $104M Cap
2028 UFA Eligibility
2026-27 Cap Share9.21%
2027-28 Projected Cap Share8.44%

Calculation: $9.583M ÷ $104M in 2026-27 and $9.583M ÷ $113.5M projected 2027-28 league cap. Actual in-season trade accounting can vary based on timing and roster circumstances.

The NHL salary cap is at $104 million this season and $113.5 million for 2027-28. That means Werenski’s unchanged $9.583 million cap hit actually becomes easier to absorb as a percentage of the league ceiling next season.

That matters to the trade market.

An elite defenseman entering his prime whose cap hit is declining relative to the ceiling could attract enormous interest if Columbus ever makes him available again.

And we already have something better than speculation to establish his market value: Dallas reportedly was prepared to make Thomas Harley the centrepiece of a trade for him.

The biggest drag on Columbus’ negotiating leverage is Werenski’s full no-move protection this season. He ultimately controls whether any proposed deal can happen.

That final factor cannot be overlooked.

The Blue Jackets might receive calls from half the league, but unless Werenski approves the destination, Columbus cannot simply auction him to the highest bidder this season.

That was demonstrated by the Dallas situation.

A Strong Blue Jackets Season Could Change the Entire Conversation

There is also another side to this story, and it may ultimately prove more important than the trade speculation.

Columbus won its opener 6-3. Knies scored twice and added an assist in his first game since arriving in the blockbuster Kirill Marchenko trade, while Werenski contributed two assists.

If the Blue Jackets establish themselves as a legitimate playoff team, there is much less reason for either side to force the issue.

That’s my biggest takeaway.

The next chapter of the Zach Werenski trade rumors probably will not be determined by one leadership decision in September. It will be determined by whether Columbus can convince Werenski that the franchise is finally positioned to win consistently.

Winning makes extension conversations easier. Losing makes every unanswered contract question louder.

And Columbus has already demonstrated with Marchenko that management is prepared to make a major move when a player’s long-term commitment becomes uncertain. The Blue Jackets traded Marchenko to Toronto shortly before the season after his camp indicated he would not re-sign, receiving Knies as the key piece of the return.

That doesn’t mean Werenski is next. His situation is different, and he has repeatedly said he wants to win in Columbus.

But the organization also knows exactly what the alternative looks like.
