Connor Hellebuyck wanted a trade. The Winnipeg Jets refused to give him away for less than what they believe an elite NHL goaltender is worth. Now, with the trade market appearing to cool and the regular season getting closer, the biggest question surrounding Winnipeg may no longer be where Hellebuyck is going.
Instead, the possibility nobody expected a few weeks ago is suddenly becoming worth discussing: could Connor Hellebuyck actually return to the Winnipeg Jets?
Hellebuyck did not report to Winnipeg Jets training camp and was suspended after publicly confirming his offseason trade request. Yet general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff has refused to treat the situation like a deadline-driven fire sale. Cheveldayoff has made it clear that Winnipeg wants a return that reflects Hellebuyck’s value and that the door to a reunion has not been completely shut.
That changes the entire dynamic. Winnipeg has leverage, Hellebuyck has significant control over where he can be moved, and interested teams still have to satisfy a Jets organization that appears perfectly willing to wait rather than make a bad trade.
Why the Winnipeg Jets Are Comfortable Waiting on Connor Hellebuyck
The most important part of the latest Connor Hellebuyck trade rumors may be what has not happened.
The Winnipeg Jets have not lowered their asking price simply because their star goaltender requested a trade. They have not rushed into a futures-heavy package just to end the distraction. And they have not publicly ruled out the possibility of Hellebuyck eventually returning.
That patience matters.
NHL insider Frank Seravalli has reported that the door remains open to a Hellebuyck return and indicated that Winnipeg’s willingness to wait is connected to the possibility that the goaltender could eventually reconsider his position. Elliotte Friedman has also reported that the trade market around Hellebuyck has become relatively quiet.
My read: that is exactly what the Jets needed to happen if they wanted to regain leverage.
When a star player publicly asks for a trade, the immediate assumption is that the team has lost negotiating power. Rival general managers know the player wants out, so they have less incentive to overpay. Winnipeg’s response has essentially been to reject that assumption.
If another NHL team wants Connor Hellebuyck, the Jets appear prepared to make that club pay appropriately.
Connor Hellebuyck Contract & Winnipeg Jets Leverage
Why it matters: Winnipeg’s strongest bargaining chip is time. The Jets control Hellebuyck’s contract for multiple seasons and have little incentive to turn an elite asset into a discounted return simply because a trade was requested.
There is another important layer here. While Hellebuyck remains suspended, Winnipeg does not have the same immediate cap-pressure problem that might normally force a club into a quick decision.
The Jets can continue listening, evaluate potential offers and wait for another team’s circumstances to change. Injuries happen. Goaltending problems emerge. Contending teams become more desperate. What looks like a limited market in September could look completely different several weeks or months later.
Has Winnipeg’s Patience Changed Hellebuyck’s Options?
This is where the situation becomes considerably more complicated for Hellebuyck.
A trade request does not automatically create a trade market capable of producing Winnipeg’s preferred return. The list of teams that need an elite goaltender, can accommodate an $8.5-million cap hit, possess attractive trade assets and would satisfy Hellebuyck’s destination preferences is naturally limited.
Reported possibilities have included clubs such as the San Jose Sharks, Utah Mammoth and Vegas Golden Knights, while several other teams have been connected to Hellebuyck at different stages of the trade saga.
But there is an enormous difference between a team showing interest and that team presenting an offer Cheveldayoff believes actually makes the Winnipeg Jets better.
That is why I believe Winnipeg’s refusal to blink has potentially changed Hellebuyck’s options.
The Jets do not need an interested team. They need the right interested team.

If the right team does not emerge, returning to Winnipeg becomes more realistic simply because the alternatives become less attractive.
That does not necessarily mean Hellebuyck suddenly changes his mind about wanting a fresh start. It means the practical realities of completing an NHL trade begin to matter more than the original trade request.
A contender may want Hellebuyck but lack the cap space. Another club may have the cap room but refuse to surrender the player Winnipeg wants. Another could assemble an attractive package but fail to fit Hellebuyck’s preferred destination criteria.
Every restriction shrinks the market.
The Quiet Connor Hellebuyck Trade Market Could Be Winnipeg’s Biggest Advantage
From Winnipeg’s perspective, moving Hellebuyck simply to eliminate an uncomfortable situation would make little sense.
This is a three-time Vezina Trophy winner who won the Hart Trophy after the 2024-25 season and helped the Jets finish with the NHL’s best regular-season record. One difficult season does not erase his ability to change games.
Hellebuyck finished 2025-26 with a 23-23-11 record, a 2.86 goals-against average and an .895 save percentage. Those numbers were clearly below his established standard, but his overall résumé still gives Winnipeg a legitimate reason to demand substantial value.
Connor Hellebuyck Two-Year Performance Trend
Data takeaway: Hellebuyck’s 2025-26 numbers represented a major decline from his Hart and Vezina-winning season, but Winnipeg is valuing the larger body of work rather than treating one down year as his new baseline.
That performance swing is important when evaluating the trade market.
A rival general manager could reasonably use Hellebuyck’s 2025-26 numbers to argue against paying Winnipeg’s maximum asking price. Cheveldayoff can just as reasonably point to the season immediately before it, when Hellebuyck was arguably the most impactful goaltender in hockey.
That creates a valuation gap.
It also creates another reason Winnipeg may prefer patience. If Hellebuyck were to return and rediscover something close to his 2024-25 form, the Jets’ negotiating position could become dramatically stronger.
He has played more than 600 NHL games for Winnipeg and spent his entire NHL career with the franchise. That history also makes this more than a normal player transaction.
There is a relationship here that has lasted more than a decade.
That does not guarantee reconciliation. It does, however, explain why both Hellebuyck and the Jets may still have reasons to find a temporary solution if a trade cannot be completed.
Could Connor Hellebuyck Actually Play for the Winnipeg Jets Again?
At this point, I would no longer dismiss it.
A month ago, a return may have sounded almost impossible. Hellebuyck had made his trade request public and clearly indicated that he believed moving on was the best direction for himself and his family.
But circumstances matter in the NHL.
If the Winnipeg Jets cannot secure appropriate value, Hellebuyck’s choices narrow. He can continue waiting for the trade market to develop, or both sides could eventually find a way to temporarily move forward together.
Returning would not necessarily mean the trade request disappeared forever.
Hellebuyck could theoretically rejoin the team, attempt to rebound from a disappointing 2025-26 season and allow Winnipeg additional time to search for a trade that satisfies the organization, the player and a potential acquiring team.
That could ultimately produce a cleaner outcome than forcing a deal today.
My observation: Winnipeg appears to understand that its strongest negotiating tactic is simply refusing to negotiate against itself.
The Jets know what Hellebuyck can be. Rival NHL teams know it too. Unless somebody is prepared to pay for that level of talent, Winnipeg has little reason to turn one of the most valuable players in franchise history into a discounted asset.
That is why the latest developments feel significant.
Earlier in this saga, almost every discussion revolved around which jersey Connor Hellebuyck would wear next. Now the possibility that he could wear a Winnipeg Jets jersey again has become part of the conversation.
The situation remains unresolved, and one serious trade offer could change everything quickly. But until that offer arrives, the Jets appear willing to wait.
And the longer Winnipeg refuses to blink, the more realistic a Connor Hellebuyck return becomes.
