Picture of Alexis Lafreniere. Will the New York Rangers trade or re-sign the former #1 overall pick?
The latest NHL trade rumors for the New York Rangers have the team trying to get Alexis Lafreniere re-signed to a contract extension.

A lot of pressure has been put on New York Rangers forward Alexis Lafreniere after being the 2020 #1 draft pick. Many expected him to tear up the league like other former #1 overall picks in John Tavares and Steven Stamkos.

NHL trade rumors have swirled around Lafreniere the past year with him being linked to the Chicago Blackhawks and Montreal Canadiens.

What will Alexis Lafreniere’s next contract look like?

Alexis Lafreniere has put up 91 points (47g, 44a) in 216 games played. He is due a new contract but will the New York Rangers re-sign him or trade him this offseason?

NHL fans of Lafreniere feel he needs an opportunity to play top 6 minutes and be on the first power play unit to produce. If he is not traded, he may get that chance with his new coach this coming season.

The NY Rangers have $2,278,417 available in salary cap space with only Lafreniere left to sign. NHL trade rumors have him seeking a bridge deal worth $3.5-$4 million a year.

If the Rangers can’t get him signed to a $2 million-a-year deal, they might have to move out another contract or look at trading the young forward.

What are NHL fans saying about the New York Rangers and Alexis Lafreniere

He deserves $4 million a year. His comparables are Jake DeBrusk ($4M+), Artturi Lehkonen ($4.5M), J.T. Compher ($5.1M). I am taking Lafreniere over any of them.

I see an offer sheet coming valued at $5 million. That would really mess with the New York Ranger salary cap.

Rangers want to sign Lafreniere for 3 years around $2 million a season. Not going to happen though.

  1. Enough about this BS pay him what he deserves & move on. Quit this trap about always trading American born players. Few if any have made the team better. I’ve been a Rangers fan for 66 years!! I’m tired of trading players who grew up in the system for questionable others. Keep Him!!!!
