Picture of Auston Matthews in a Arizona Coyotes jersey. Will he re-sign in Toronto?
Auston Matthews can sign a long-term extension with the Toronto Maple Leafs this summer. He is seeking $14 million/year.

Toronto Maple Leafs star forward Auston Matthews is due a new contract in the summer of 2024 but he can be signed to a long-term extension on July 1, 2023.

Matthews has stated at the Leafs end-of-season media session that he wants to sign an extension with the team this summer, but everyone is wondering what dollar number will it cost the Leafs?

Auston Matthews next contact – wants $14 million/year

On the Ray and Dregs Hockey Podcast NHL Insider Darren Dreger was discussing the Auston Matthews contract and he believes that Matthews will seek a 5-year deal worth $14 million/year.

The Maple Leafs core four will be broken up and with Mitch Marner due a new contract in two years in which he will seek the same money as Matthews, could lead the Leafs management to trade William Nylander this summer.

Nylander does have a modified 10-team no-trade clause kicking in on July 1, 2023. After putting up 87 points (40g, 47a) in 82 games this past season, Nylander will be looking for a significant raise which the Leafs will just not be able to afford.

If the Leafs can’t get Matthews signed to a new contract before July 1, they will have to look at trading him. His no-move clause kicks in on July 1 and the Leafs will not risk losing Matthews for nothing when the season ends next season.

What are Leaf fans saying about Auston Matthews next contract?

Offer Matthews $12 million a year. Anymore than that and show him the door. Hasn’t proven he is worth anymore.

Matthews will sign an extension this summer. Be nominated captain when Tavares’ contract expires next season. He will be here another 5-8 years.

Matthews wants to be in Arizona. Move him before there’s another Johnny Gaudreau situation going on, ESPECIALLY if there’s intent to move Mitch Marner or another large piece.

Offer Auston Matthews a fair deal that’s a realistic % of the teams cap a little less than what Nathan MacKinnon signed for and if it doesn’t work move him by July 1st.
