The Ottawa Senators are still searching for another proven finisher, and one of the most logical options left on the NHL free-agent market is a player they already know extremely well: Vladimir Tarasenko.
Tarasenko returning to Ottawa is not currently being reported as an imminent signing. There is no confirmed contract offer, scheduled meeting or advanced negotiation. However, the connection is more than random offseason speculation. Senators general manager Steve Staios has acknowledged that Ottawa would still like to add a pure sniper, while Tarasenko remains unsigned after scoring 23 goals in 75 games with the Minnesota Wild.
That combination makes a reunion difficult to ignore.
In my view, Tarasenko is no longer the dominant 35- or 40-goal winger he was during his prime with the St. Louis Blues. He does not need to be that player for this move to work. Ottawa would be signing him to finish chances, support the power play and provide secondary scoring, not to carry its offence.
Why Vladimir Tarasenko Makes Sense for the Ottawa Senators
Tarasenko finished the 2025-26 season with 23 goals, 24 assists and 47 points in 75 games for Minnesota. That works out to a pace of approximately 25 goals and 51 points over a full 82-game schedule.
Those numbers become more interesting when considering that he averaged less than 15 minutes of ice time per game. Tarasenko was no longer being deployed as an unquestioned first-line star, yet he still found the net 23 times and converted 15.5 percent of his shots.
That is the specific skill Ottawa appears to be targeting.
The Senators have playmakers who can transport the puck, create controlled offensive-zone entries and draw defenders away from shooting lanes. What they could use is another winger who instinctively finds quiet space and can release the puck before a goaltender gets set.
Tarasenko could potentially play beside one of Ottawa’s skilled centres or move throughout the middle six depending on matchups. He could also become a shooting option on the second power-play unit while remaining available to move onto the top unit when injuries or scoring slumps occur.
There is also familiarity on both sides.
Tarasenko recorded 17 goals and 24 assists for 41 points in 57 games during his previous Ottawa Senators stint in 2023-24. The Senators later traded him to the Florida Panthers, where he helped Florida capture the 2024 Stanley Cup.
That history matters. Ottawa already knows how Tarasenko approaches practices, how he fits inside a dressing room and what type of deployment gives him the best chance to produce. Tarasenko also knows the market, the facilities and several members of the organization.

What a Vladimir Tarasenko Contract Could Cost Ottawa
The biggest obstacle is not the hockey fit. It is the combination of salary-cap space and roster availability.
Ottawa currently has approximately $4.196 million in projected cap space, but the team also has a full 23-player active roster. The Senators cannot simply add Tarasenko without removing, trading or assigning another player.

My projected sweet spot would be a one-year contract worth between $2.75 million and $3.25 million. That is my valuation, not a reported contract demand or offer.
Anything substantially above $3.5 million would leave Ottawa with very little flexibility for injuries, recalls and future transactions. A lower one-year salary could make sense for Tarasenko if it gives him a strong offensive role and another opportunity to raise his value before returning to free agency.
Is the Vladimir Tarasenko Rumor Actually Credible?
I would separate the rumor into two categories: fit and likelihood.
The fit is strong. Tarasenko is a proven shooter, has already produced in Ottawa and would not require the Senators to surrender draft picks or prospects. I would give the hockey fit a seven out of 10.
The likelihood is more difficult to evaluate. Ottawa has a full roster, limited flexibility and several forwards already competing for offensive minutes. Tarasenko may also prefer a more obvious top-six role or a team viewed as a stronger Stanley Cup favourite.
For those reasons, I would give the current signing likelihood a four out of 10.
This rumor should be taken seriously enough to monitor, but it should not be presented as though a contract is close. The most accurate description is that Tarasenko represents a familiar and logical option while Ottawa evaluates whether one more offensive addition is worth the cap and roster complications.
My personal view is that the Senators should pursue the reunion only on a one-year contract. Tarasenko’s shooting ability could provide genuine value, but Ottawa should not sacrifice its longer-term flexibility or block younger players with a multiyear commitment.
