The Vancouver Canucks are reportedly looking to trade defenseman Vincent Desharnais to clear cap space ahead of the NHL trade deadline. What's the asking price and where could he land?

It’s no secret that the Vancouver Canucks are looking to shake things up as they hang onto the final Wild Card spot. The pressure is on to make some changes to the roster. And it seems like general manager Patrik Allvin is already working the phones.

NHL insider Elliotte Friedman recently reported on his “Saturday Headlines” segment on Sportsnet that the Canucks are actively shopping defenseman Vincent Desharnais. The 28-year-old right-shot defenseman signed a two-year contract with the Canucks in the offseason, but it hasn’t quite worked out as hoped. With a $2 million AAV, Desharnais represents a moveable asset for a team looking to free up some financial flexibility.

What’s the Return the Vancouver Canucks want for Vincent Desharnais?

Friedman suggests that the Canucks are open to a variety of returns for Desharnais but would ideally prefer draft picks. Given their current cap situation, it’s unlikely they’ll be eager to take on any salary in a potential trade. This makes him a prime target for contending teams looking to bolster their blue line without sacrificing roster players.

The move makes sense for the Canucks. If they can move Desharnais’ contract, they would have over $7.2 million in NHL trade deadline cap space. That kind of financial freedom could allow them to make a significant splash and acquire a top-six forward or a top-pairing defenseman – something this team desperately needs.

Of course, trading Desharnais isn’t without its risks. He provides valuable depth on the right side, and finding a suitable replacement could prove challenging. However, with the trade deadline approaching in a few months, it seems the Canucks are willing to take that gamble in order to create the cap space necessary to make a major move.

This situation is definitely one to watch in the coming weeks. As the deadline gets closer, expect the Canucks to become increasingly active in trade talks. Whether they can find the right deal for Desharnais remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: change is coming to Vancouver.
