The Vancouver Canucks’ offseason is going to be busy, and it sounds like they’ll be in the market for a new defenseman. NHL insider Frank Seravalli doesn’t anticipate the Canucks making an effort to re-sign veteran blueliner Nikita Zadorov.
Zadorov is winding down a two-year contract with a cap hit of $3.75 million. With the Canucks’ salary cap situation already tight, Seravalli believes Zadorov will command upwards of $5 million annually on his next deal – a figure Vancouver likely can’t afford.
This sentiment was reportedly shared by the Calgary Flames, making it easier for them to facilitate the trade that landed Zadorov in Vancouver earlier this season.
Nikita Zadorov’s Time in Vancouver Likely Coming to an End
The Canucks have other pressing financial priorities this summer. Filip Hronek is due for a substantial raise that will likely see his AAV start at around $8 million per year. With limited cap flexibility, the Canucks will have to make tough choices.
Zadorov’s strong physical presence has been a boon to their blue line, but it appears his time with the franchise will be short-lived.
Where Zadorov will end up next is anyone’s guess. There should be a solid market for a big defenseman with his skillset and playoff experience.
