Jack Eichel of the Vegas Golden Knights and Auston Matthews of the Toronto Maple Leafs featured in an NHL fantasy hockey prediction matchup for October 8, 2026.
Jack Eichel and Auston Matthews headline the Vegas Golden Knights vs. Toronto Maple Leafs matchup on October 8, 2026. With both stars driving their teams’ offense, fantasy hockey managers will be watching closely to see who delivers the bigger performance.

The Toronto Maple Leafs finally saw their biggest fantasy weapons break loose Tuesday. Now comes the harder question: can Auston Matthews, William Nylander and rookie Gavin McKenna carry that momentum into Las Vegas against one of the NHL’s hottest offenses?

Toronto visits the Vegas Golden Knights on tonight, and this matchup has considerably more fantasy upside than the Maple Leafs’ 2-2-0 record might suggest. Matthews erupted for four points in Toronto’s 5-4 overtime comeback against Nashville, Nylander added three points, and McKenna finally recorded the first goal and assist of his NHL career. Vegas counters with Jack Eichel, who has an incredible 10 points through four games, and a Golden Knights attack averaging 4.25 goals per game.

The biggest thing I’m watching is special teams. Vegas has converted 31.25 percent of its power plays, while Toronto has killed 90.91 percent of its penalties. Something has to give, and that battle could decide which group produces the best fantasy performances tonight.

Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Vegas Golden Knights Fantasy Hockey Matchup Outlook

The early numbers favour Vegas offensively. The Golden Knights have scored 17 goals in four games, an average of 4.25 per game, while allowing only 10. Toronto has scored and allowed 11, producing identical 2.75 goals-per-game and goals-against averages.

Vegas also owns the more dangerous power play at 31.25 percent compared with Toronto’s 21.43 percent. Toronto’s penalty kill, however, has been excellent at 90.91 percent, compared with an also-strong 83.33 percent for Vegas. Those percentages come from tiny early-season samples, but they matter for fantasy managers because Vegas has already shown how quickly Eichel and Tomas Hertl can punish teams when given extra-man opportunities.

There is another trend I would not ignore. Vegas swept both meetings last season, winning 6-5 in overtime in Las Vegas on January 15 and 6-3 in Toronto on January 23. Eichel scored the overtime winner in the first meeting and was again productive in the rematch. That does not guarantee anything tonight, but it reinforces the concern about Toronto containing Vegas’ elite offensive players.

Toronto does have one encouraging underlying sign: Hockey-Reference has the Maple Leafs controlling 53.2 percent of five-on-five shot attempts through four games. Their five-on-five shooting percentage has been only 7.1 percent. I see some room for offensive regression in Toronto’s favour if Matthews and Nylander continue driving play.

NHL Fantasy Players to Watch in Maple Leafs vs. Golden Knights

Matthews is the player I would build Toronto’s fantasy outlook around. He has five points in four games, is averaging more than 22 minutes per night and is coming off a one-goal, three-assist performance against Nashville. The encouraging part was not simply the four points; it was how frequently Toronto’s offense flowed through him late in the comeback.

Nylander might be even hotter. He leads Toronto with three goals and six points through four games and has already scored on the power play. His combination of shot creation, PP usage and finishing makes him one of Toronto’s safest fantasy plays.

Then there is McKenna. The No. 1 pick went pointless through his first three NHL games before scoring and assisting against Nashville. His roughly 14½-minute workload is still well below Matthews or Nylander territory, so I would not project him like an established superstar yet. But his offensive-zone role beside John Tavares and Nylander gives him legitimate single-game upside.

Vegas revolves around Eichel. Ten points in four games, two goals and eight assists, is obviously an unsustainable season-long pace, but the underlying fantasy situation is excellent. He centers the top line, receives premium power-play time and has already produced five power-play points.

Hertl is another player I like because his value is not dependent entirely on even-strength deployment. He has three goals and five points, including three power-play goals. Mark Stone remains attached to Eichel at even strength and the top special-teams group, giving him exposure to Vegas’ most dangerous offensive situations.

Victor Olofsson deserves attention after scoring four goals in four games, but he left Tuesday’s 6-2 win against Seattle following a boarding hit and is listed day-to-day. I would not lock him into a fantasy lineup until his status is updated.

Top Five Maple Leafs and Golden Knights Fantasy Scorers This Season

The early scoring race illustrates how differently these teams have generated offense. Nylander and Matthews have carried Toronto, while Eichel has already created a significant gap over every other Vegas player.

NHLTradeRumor.com Scoring Index: Each player’s point total is indexed against his team’s leading scorer. This visualization describes past production and is not a future projection. Toronto has multiple players tied at the three-point cutoff, including Jack Roslovic. Vegas also has additional players tied around the cutoff.

For additional context, last season Toronto was led by Nylander at 30-49-79, followed by Tavares at 31-40-71, Matthew Knies at 23-43-66, Matthews at 27-26-53, and Oliver Ekman-Larsson at 8-31-39; Matias Maccelli also finished with 39 points. Vegas was led by Eichel at 27-63-90, Mitch Marner at 24-56-80, Stone at 28-45-73, Pavel Dorofeyev at 37-27-64, and Ivan Barbashev at 23-38-61.

The major Toronto change is obvious: Knies is no longer part of that attack after moving to Columbus, creating additional opportunity for Marchenko, McKenna, Cowan and Roslovic.

Injuries and Absences That Could Affect Fantasy Value

Toronto continues to operate without Max Domi and Dakota Joshua, who are on LTIR, while William Villeneuve and Cade Webber are also unavailable. Domi’s absence matters most from a fantasy perspective because it removes an experienced offensive option and helps preserve larger roles for Toronto’s new-look forward combinations.

That has helped keep Marchenko beside Matthews and opened meaningful top-six minutes for McKenna. Toronto used Marchenko-Matthews-Roslovic and McKenna-Tavares-Nylander in its latest available projected lineup against Nashville. Those combinations should still be considered expected rather than officially confirmed for tonight until Toronto publishes its game-day lineup.

Vegas’ biggest new concern is Olofsson. He scored twice against Seattle before leaving in the third period after being boarded. If he cannot play, his absence could create additional power-play and offensive-zone opportunity for players such as Trevor Connelly or another winger promoted through the lineup.

Starting goalies also remain unconfirmed as of this morning. Anthony Stolarz is 2-0-0 with a .904 save percentage for Toronto, while Carter Hart is 2-1-0 with a 2.70 goals-against average for Vegas. Do not treat either as tonight’s confirmed starter until morning-skate or team information is released.

Maple Leafs vs. Golden Knights Salary-Cap Snapshot

Both clubs are currently using LTIR mechanisms, which is why their projected cap hits can appear above the NHL’s $104 million ceiling. Toronto currently has $7 million in available current cap space according to PuckPedia, while Vegas is listed at $0. The cap picture does not predict tonight’s result, but it can affect future recalls, waiver moves and the opportunities eventually available to young players.

Maple Leafs vs. Golden Knights Fantasy Hockey Prediction

MY SCORE PREDICTION: Vegas Golden Knights 4 – Toronto Maple Leafs 3

I expect this to be one of Toronto’s tougher early-season tests. The Maple Leafs showed against Nashville that their elite players can erase mistakes quickly, but Vegas has been more dangerous offensively through four games, owns home ice and has already scored five power-play goals.

My fantasy advantage goes narrowly to Vegas because Eichel’s line and PP1 give the Golden Knights multiple paths to offense. I still expect Matthews and Nylander to generate chances, particularly if Toronto can avoid spending long stretches defending.

Goaltending could change the projection once starters are confirmed. Stolarz has produced the stronger early Toronto numbers, while Vegas has received a workable start from both Hart and Adin Hill.

More important to fantasy managers than the final score, though, is McKenna’s deployment. If his ice time climbs and he begins receiving more premium power-play touches after breaking through against Nashville, his fantasy ceiling changes quickly. That is the development I will be watching most closely.
