The Toronto Maple Leafs are once again at the epicenter of NHL trade rumors, with the futures of two key forwards, Nick Robertson and Mitch Marner, hanging in the balance.
Nick Robertson: A Star in the Making?
NHL insider Darren Dreger’s recent comments on TSN 1050 radio suggest that Nick Robertson’s time to shine in Toronto may finally be here. With openings on the left wing and a new head coach in Craig Berube who’s known for giving young players a chance, Robertson seems poised to secure a regular spot in the lineup. If he can translate his undeniable potential into on-ice production, the Leafs could have a bona fide star on their hands.
Dreger also expressed confidence that Robertson will re-sign with the Leafs, noting a lack of interest from other teams in tendering an offer sheet. This suggests that Robertson’s future is firmly in Toronto, at least for the foreseeable future.
Mitch Marner: The Price of Stardom
The situation with Mitch Marner is more complex. While Dreger believes that Marner wants to stay in Toronto, the sticking point, as always, is money. Marner’s reported desire for a contract in the Leon Draisaitl range of $14 million per year could put a significant strain on the Leafs’ salary cap.
If the Leafs struggle out of the gate this season, GM Brad Treliving will face a tough decision at the trade deadline. Does he gamble on re-signing Marner in the summer, risk losing him for nothing in free agency, or explore trade options, even if it means asking Marner to waive his no-trade clause?
While Marner’s next contract is likely to be a whopper, it’s unlikely to reach the $14 million mark. A long-term deal in the $12-13 million range seems more realistic, given the Leafs’ cap constraints and the need to keep a competitive roster around their core players.
