Ever since Mikko Rantanen was traded to the Carolina Hurricanes on Friday, NHL trade rumors have been swirling about the possibility of Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby joining the Colorado Avalanche to reunite with longtime friend Nathan MacKinnon.
Sidney Crosby Ends Trade Speculation Amid Avalanche Rumors
However, Crosby wasted no time putting an end to the speculation. In an interview with DK Pittsburgh Sports, the three-time Stanley Cup champion addressed the rumors head-on, stating:
“I know how speculation works: Everybody’s looking to talk about different things, different scenarios. I can’t control that. I don’t know where that comes from. I don’t think that it’s something I’m going to discuss every time someone speculates something. I’m not going to answer it every time that happens.”
Crosby’s frustration with the ongoing trade rumors is understandable. At 37 years old, he remains one of the NHL’s elite players despite playing for a struggling Penguins team. With 15 goals and 53 points in 52 games this season, he continues to be the heartbeat of the franchise that drafted him first overall in 2005.
Adding to the unlikelihood of any trade, Crosby signed a two-year contract extension this past summer, keeping him in Pittsburgh through the 2026-27 season at his signature $8.7 million cap hit. He also holds a full no-movement clause, meaning any trade would require his direct approval—something he has given no indication of entertaining.
For now, it seems clear: Sidney Crosby has no intention of leaving the Penguins. While trade rumors will continue to swirl as long as Pittsburgh remains outside the playoff picture, the captain himself has made his stance clear. Barring an unforeseen change in circumstances, expect Crosby to finish his career in black and gold.
