The Colorado Avalanche are wasting no time reevaluating their roster after a disappointing first-round playoff exit at the hands of the Dallas Stars. Ironically, it was former Avs star Mikko Rantanen—now a Dallas Star—who delivered the knockout blow, showcasing just how thin Colorado’s depth has become behind their top line.
With the team firmly in “win now” mode, Avalanche management is believed to be exploring options to solidify their second-line center role. One intriguing name making the rounds in Sam Bennett rumors is the rugged Florida Panthers forward, who could hit the open market on July 1.
Could Sam Bennett Be a Fit for the Avalanche?
According to Avalanche insider Aarif Deen, Colorado’s front office could pivot toward Sam Bennett if they are unable to bring back Brock Nelson, who is also a pending free agent. Bennett, 28, is known for his physical style of play, playoff grit, and ability to chip in offensively. He fits the mold of what general manager Chris MacFarland is likely seeking—an edge player who can win battles, drive play, and handle tough matchups.
However, there is a financial gamble in play. Bennett is rumored to be seeking a long-term contract in the range of $8–$9 million AAV. That’s a steep price tag for a player approaching 30 who plays an aggressive style that wears on the body. While the short-term upside is clear, the back half of that contract could be problematic.
Still, the Avs are in their championship window. With Nathan MacKinnon, Cale Makar, and Martin Necas in their prime, the front office may be willing to risk overpaying in the future for immediate contention. If Bennett is available and the price is right—both in term and dollars—expect Colorado to be a serious suitor.
