The news hit Madison Square Garden like a slap shot to the ankle: Adam Fox is on LTIR, and the New York Rangers’ power play suddenly looks rudderless. But before panic sets in on Broadway, a familiar solution might be waiting in… Grand Rapids?
According to Elliotte Friedman on the latest 32 Thoughts podcast, Rangers GM Chris Drury isn’t sitting on his hands. Friedman reports that the Blueshirts are actively scouring the market for a “power play quarterback” to stop the bleeding, and one name is gaining serious traction: Erik Gustafsson.
Currently buried in the AHL with the Detroit Red Wings’ affiliate, Gustafsson is no stranger to saving the Rangers’ bacon. Remember November 2023? When Fox went down, it was Gustafsson who stepped onto the top unit and kept the ship afloat. Now, with Detroit’s blue line overflowing with young talent like Axel Sandin-Pellikka, “Gus” is the odd man out—making him the perfect, low-cost target for a desperate Rangers squad.
Why the Red Wings Are Ready to Deal
As someone who watches the cap gymnastics of the NHL daily, this move makes too much sense not to happen. The Rangers don’t need a Norris Trophy winner; they need a stabilizer. I watched Gustafsson dominate the AHL last weekend (3 assists in a 3-2 win), and frankly, he’s too good for the minors. Detroit needs to move his contract to clear space for their youth movement, and New York needs a plug-and-play veteran who already knows Mike Sullivan’s system (or the remnants of the system Gustafsson played in previously).
The writing has been on the wall in Detroit for months. With Simon Edvinsson and Sandin-Pellikka needing big minutes, a 33-year-old veteran on a one-way deal is a luxury the Wings can’t afford to hoard—especially one playing in Grand Rapids. Friedman’s report suggests the Rangers are “looking around,” but let’s be real: Drury loves a reunion. Acquiring Gustafsson would likely cost a mid-to-late round pick, a price the Rangers will happily pay to keep their special teams from falling off a cliff during Fox’s absence.
