My biggest focus is not simply Crosby against the Flyers. It is how Pittsburgh replaces Bryan Rust, who opens the season on injured reserve, and how Philadelphia deploys an intriguing new-look power play featuring Trevor Zegras, Matvei Michkov, Porter Martone, Tyson Foerster and Jamie Drysdale. Pittsburgh still has the stronger statistical offensive baseline after scoring 290 goals last season, but Philadelphia eliminated the Penguins in six playoff games and enters opening night with several young players moving into larger fantasy roles.
The player I am watching most closely is Michkov. His preseason usage suggests Philadelphia wants to give him a legitimate chance to grow into a premier power-play weapon. On Pittsburgh’s side, Rust’s absence makes Crosby, Rickard Rakell and Erik Karlsson even more important from a fantasy perspective.

Both teams start 2026-27 at 0-0-0, so last season provides the best statistical baseline.
Pittsburgh finished 41-25-16 with 98 points, scoring 290 goals and allowing 258. The Penguins averaged 3.54 goals per game, converted at 24.14 percent on the power play and killed 81.43 percent of opposing power plays. Philadelphia also finished with 98 points at 43-27-12, but its profile was very different: 240 goals, 239 allowed, 2.93 goals per game, a 15.74 percent power play and a 77.55 percent penalty kill.
That gives Pittsburgh the obvious offensive and special-teams edge on paper. Philadelphia’s advantage was defensive structure, allowing 19 fewer goals.
The rivalry results complicate the picture. Pittsburgh went 2-0-2 against Philadelphia during the 2025-26 regular season, yet Philadelphia won the first-round playoff series 4-2. The most recent meeting ended with Cam York scoring the overtime winner in a 1-0 Game 6 Flyers victory.

Pittsburgh’s latest official practice configuration had Nick Robertson with Crosby and Rickard Rakell, followed by Egor Chinakhov-Tommy Novak-Evgeni Malkin. Erik Karlsson remains the most important offensive defenseman.
Rust’s injury is particularly important because Pittsburgh had been using Karlsson, Crosby, Rakell, Novak and Rust on its first power-play unit late in camp. Rust’s absence leaves a valuable fantasy opening that should be monitored before puck drop.
Philadelphia’s projected lines are more surprising. Its team preview listed Owen Tippett-Trevor Zegras-Porter Martone, Tyson Foerster-Noah Cates-Matvei Michkov, and Alex Bump-Christian Dvorak-Travis Konecny. Even more notable for fantasy managers, Philadelphia has experimented with a PP1 of Martone, Foerster, Michkov, Zegras and Jamie Drysdale, pushing established fantasy names Konecny and Tippett toward PP2.
That usage could change quickly, but it is one of the most important fantasy developments in this game.

Top Five Pittsburgh Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers Fantasy Scorers From Last Season
Crosby led Pittsburgh with 74 points, followed by Karlsson at 66, Rust at 65, Anthony Mantha at 64 and Malkin at 61. Philadelphia was led by Konecny with 68 and Zegras with 67; Dvorak, Michkov and Tippett each finished with 51.
The historical context matters because Rust is unavailable tonight, while Mantha is not part of Pittsburgh’s opening-night roster. That removes 129 points of last season’s top-five production from the lineup before Game 1.
Injuries and Absences That Could Affect Fantasy Value
Pittsburgh enters opening night with substantially more lineup disruption. Rust is on IR with an upper-body injury; Justin Brazeau and Ben Kindel are also on IR, Blake Lizotte is dealing with an upper-body issue, and Ryan Graves has a knee injury. Andrei Kuzmenko is designated non-roster for personal reasons.
The fantasy beneficiaries are Nick Robertson, who has been skating with Crosby and Rakell, and potentially Chinakhov, Novak and Pittsburgh’s younger forwards. Assistant GM Jason Spezza said there will be “plenty of opportunities for young guys to establish themselves as NHL players,” and opening night may provide the first example.
Philadelphia is healthier. Denver Barkey is on IR and Helge Grans is injured non-roster, while Nikita Grebenkin has been listed day-to-day. Vladar had an upper-body issue in camp, but Philadelphia’s latest team preview said he should be ready. A starter had not been officially confirmed in the sources reviewed, so I would not lock Vladar or Joseph Woll into fantasy lineups based solely on projected depth-chart order.

Philadelphia has considerably more flexibility for recalls, waivers and future roster additions. That does not predict tonight’s winner, but over a full fantasy season it can influence who receives opportunities when injuries occur.

I expect a much more offensive game than the 1-0 overtime finale that ended Pittsburgh’s season.
Pittsburgh has the strongest proven fantasy weapon in Crosby and the better special-teams baseline. Its 24.14 percent power play was dramatically more effective than Philadelphia’s 15.74 percent unit last season. But losing Rust matters, particularly because he contributed 65 points and was part of Pittsburgh’s PP1 structure. Philadelphia has home ice, more roster continuity and several young offensive players being put into potentially valuable special-teams positions.
My slight fantasy advantage goes to Philadelphia’s young forwards because of the upside surrounding Zegras, Michkov and Martone. Crosby remains the single player I trust most to produce a point, while Karlsson has strong assist upside if Pittsburgh earns multiple power plays.
Goaltending creates the most uncertainty. Philadelphia expects Vladar to be available, but I would verify the starter immediately before publication. Pittsburgh carries Arturs Silovs and Sergei Murashov; I did not find an official opening-night starter confirmation in the team material reviewed.
For fantasy managers, the final score matters less than Philadelphia’s PP1 deployment and Pittsburgh’s replacement for Rust on the top unit. If Michkov and Martone stay on PP1 while Konecny and Tippett remain on PP2, that is actionable information well beyond one game.
