Mitch Marner rumors continue to swirl, and the latest speculation has linked the talented winger to the Pittsburgh Penguins. If Marner hits free agency on July 1, Penguins general manager Kyle Dubas could be eager to reunite with the playmaking star.

Josh Yohe of The Athletic recently noted the connection between Marner and Dubas, who previously served as general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs. With Pittsburgh set to have significant cap space next offseason, the idea of signing Marner is not far-fetched.

Why Mitch Marner to the Penguins Makes Sense

One of the biggest selling points for the Penguins is Marner’s close relationship with captain Sidney Crosby. Having a superstar like Crosby advocating for Pittsburgh could make a difference in Marner’s decision-making process. Additionally, the Penguins are actively looking to inject younger talent into their aging roster. At 27 years old, Marner would immediately provide a high-end offensive boost while still being in the prime of his career.

Marner has consistently been one of the NHL’s top playmakers, leading the Maple Leafs with 82 points in just 66 games this season. Since 2021-22, he has averaged an impressive 104 points per 82 games, making him a premier offensive threat. A potential Marner-Crosby connection could help extend Pittsburgh’s competitive window in the Eastern Conference.

Why Mitch Marner Will Likely Stay with the Leafs

Despite the Penguins’ potential interest, most insiders believe Marner will ultimately remain in Toronto. The Maple Leafs hold a significant advantage when it comes to contract negotiations. They can offer Marner an eight-year deal, while other teams, including Pittsburgh, can only offer a maximum of seven years.

Additionally, the Leafs have the financial power to structure Marner’s contract with massive signing bonus payments, something few teams can match. Toronto could front-load his deal with annual July 1 bonuses worth $13 million, making it difficult for him to walk away from such a lucrative offer.

While the Penguins may be an intriguing option, Marner’s long-standing ties to Toronto and the Leafs’ ability to outbid other teams in both contract length and structure make it less likely that he will leave the organization.
