The Pittsburgh Penguins have been a hotbed of NHL trade rumors lately, with many expecting a major roster shakeup. However, the team made a surprising move on Monday, acquiring forward Philip Tomasino from the Nashville Predators in exchange for a fourth-round draft pick in 2027.
Philip Tomasino Brings Youth and Potential to the Pittsburgh Penguins
Tomasino, a 23-year-old center, was drafted 24th overall by the Predators in 2019. While he has shown flashes of offensive potential, he hasn’t quite cemented a consistent role in Nashville. This season, he’s appeared in 11 games, recording one assist while averaging just over 11 minutes of ice time.
This trade raises some eyebrows. On the surface, it seems like a relatively minor move for a team that many believe needs to make bigger changes. Tomasino adds some youth and depth to the Penguins’ forward group, but it’s unclear if he’ll be able to crack their top six.
My take? This could be a shrewd move by Penguins GM Kyle Dubas. Tomasino has the skillset to be a top-six forward in this league. He’s a strong skater with good puck skills and a nose for the net. Perhaps a change of scenery is all he needs to unlock his full potential.
Or, this could be a prelude to a bigger trade. The Penguins are still rumored to be shopping several players, including defenseman Marcus Pettersson and forwards Drew O’Connor, Cody Glass, Anthony Beauvillier, Matt Nieto, and Jesse Puljujarvi. It’s possible that Tomasino is being brought in as a replacement for one of these players.
Only time will tell what Dubas’ ultimate plan is. But one thing is for sure: this trade has added another layer of intrigue to the Penguins’ already fascinating season.
