Vegas Golden Knights defenseman Nicolas Hague, a rumored trade target for the Montreal Canadiens
Nicolas Hague rumors are heating up! We explore a potential blockbuster trade sending the 6'6" defenseman from the Vegas Golden Knights to the Montreal Canadiens.

As the NHL offseason carousel begins to spin, the rumor mill is churning with intriguing possibilities. Here at NHLTradeRumor.com, we’re hearing strong whispers that Montreal Canadiens GM Kent Hughes is targeting a significant upgrade for his blue line, and the name on his list is a big one—literally. Vegas Golden Knights defenseman Nicolas Hague is the subject of intense speculation, and a move to Montreal makes a world of sense for both sides.

The Vegas Golden Knights, fresh off another competitive season, find themselves in a familiar salary cap crunch. With their top-four defense corps solidified by the likes of Noah Hanifin, Alex Pietrangelo, Brayden McNabb, and Shea Theodore, re-signing the 26-year-old Nicolas Hague to a new contract as a restricted free agent is becoming a luxury they likely can’t afford. Hague, a 6’6″, 245-pound behemoth who averages a steady 18 minutes a night, is a valuable piece, but he’s expendable for a Vegas team that needs to allocate funds elsewhere.

This is where Kent Hughes and the Canadiens come in. Rumors suggest a potential trade framework could look something like this:

  • Montreal Canadiens receive: Nicolas Hague, 2027 7th-round pick
  • Vegas Golden Knights receive: Arber Xhekaj, 2026 2nd-round pick (via Columbus), 2025 3rd-round pick (via New Jersey)

Why Nicolas Hague is the Perfect Fit for the Canadiens

For the Canadiens, this is the type of calculated move that signals a turn from rebuilding to competing. While the prospect cupboard is stocked with immense talent like Lane Hutson and David Reinbacher, the current roster lacks a player with Hague’s specific skill set. He brings a towering presence to the back end, something Montreal has desperately needed. His reach and defensive acumen would make him an ideal partner for a more offensively-minded defenseman like Mike Matheson or the emerging Hutson, providing the stability and net-front presence required to let them flourish. Hague isn’t just big; he’s a proven, Stanley Cup-winning defenseman who can handle tough matchups and excel on the penalty kill. He embodies the size and poise that successful playoff teams are built on.

The Tough Cost of an Upgrade

Of course, acquiring a player of Hague’s caliber comes at a cost, and in this scenario, it’s a fan favorite. Arber Xhekaj, affectionately known as “The Sheriff,” would be heading to Vegas. His departure would sting for the Bell Centre faithful who have embraced his physical, no-nonsense style. However, from a team-building perspective, it’s a move you have to make. You’re trading from a position of strength (toughness and grit) to address a significant weakness (defensive size and reach). For Vegas, Xhekaj is a perfect solution. His $1.3 million cap hit is a dream for their bottom line, and he would slot in seamlessly on the third pairing next to Zach Whitecloud, providing cost-controlled sandpaper and instantly becoming a hit with the T-Mobile Arena crowd. The addition of two valuable draft picks gives Vegas the assets needed to justify moving a player of Hague’s stature. This is the kind of smart, balanced hockey trade that could propel the Canadiens into the playoff conversation.

  1. This makes no sense at all for Montreal.
The Habs need a 2C desperately.
They are also extremely short handed when it comes to RHDs.
And although they have plenty of bodies for the wings, they still have plenty of questions about the future of their wingers too.
But when it comes to LHDs, they already have Guhle, Hutson, Mathesson, Xhekaj, and Struble (with Engstrom in the weeds). Upgrading their LHD position is the last thing they need to worry about and this kind of move would just guarantee we need to use 5 lefties in our top 6.
Furthermore, Xhekaj has the potential to be more valuable than Hague on his own with his own size, style, physicality, combined with his ceiling. He’s the perfect bottom pair guy for the Habs. Hague would still be well behind Guhle, Hutson, and Mathesson on the Habs depth chart, so does he bump the only righty out of the top 4 (Carrier) or is Hague just an expansive upgrade for the bottom pair? It makes no sense to add Hague from a Habs perspective, maybe if he was a righty….
On top of all that, the Habs really don’t have an abundance of cap space unless they find a way to move Price’s contract.
