The latest NHL trade rumors have Kaapo Kakko linked to the Buffalo Sabres. Could the struggling Rangers forward be on his way out of New York?

The New York Rangers and Buffalo Sabres are both mired in frustrating slumps, leading to a flurry of NHL trade rumors. The latest buzz has the Rangers potentially moving on from former second-overall pick Kaapo Kakko, with the Sabres emerging as a possible landing spot.

NY Rangers insider Larry Brooks recently suggested that General Manager Chris Drury should explore a Kakko trade, even going so far as to propose a swap for Buffalo’s Jordan Greenway. This has ignited speculation about what a potential deal could look like and whether these two struggling teams could find common ground.

Why the New York Rangers Might Move Kaapo Kakko

Despite his pedigree, Kakko hasn’t quite lived up to the lofty expectations that come with being a top draft pick. With just 14 points in 30 games this season, his offensive production has been underwhelming. He’s struggled to find consistency and a defined role in the Rangers’ system. A change of scenery could benefit both the player and the team.

What the Sabres Could Offer

The Sabres, desperate to end their 11-game losing streak, might see Kakko as a reclamation project with high upside. They have a wealth of young talent and could be willing to part with a roster player like Greenway, a physical presence who could add some grit to the Rangers’ lineup. If the Rangers are looking for draft capital instead, a second-round pick might be the best they can get for Kakko at this point.

Is This the Right Move for Both Teams?

While the idea of a Kakko-for-Greenway swap is intriguing, it’s important to consider the fit for both teams. Greenway’s physicality and size could be an asset for the Rangers, but he doesn’t address their need for more scoring punch. For the Sabres, acquiring a young player with Kakko’s potential is tempting, but they need to ensure he aligns with their long-term plans.

My Take:

Frankly, I’m not sure this trade makes much sense for either side. The Rangers would be selling low on Kakko, a player who still has the potential to develop into a star. Greenway is a decent bottom-six forward, but he’s not the kind of player who is going to move the needle for the Rangers. The Sabres, meanwhile, should be focusing on acquiring players who can help them win now, not reclamation projects.

I think the Rangers would be better off holding onto Kakko and giving him more time to develop. If they are determined to trade him, they should be aiming for a higher return than Greenway or a second-round pick.
