The Score: The Detroit Red Wings are in the market for a blue-liner who can play a physical game and bring relief to some of the team’s veteran defensemen, according to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman.
The Red Wings reportedly had interest in Toronto Maple Leafs captain Dion Phaneuf at the trade deadline, but the two sides couldn’t come to an agreement. The Leafs want Anthony Mantha as part of a Phaneuf trade.
It was also reported that the teams could revisit that deal, and if that’s true, Phaneuf could fill the role of “mean” that the team is looking for.
NYPost: Larry Brooks is reporting that Martin St. Louis will not be back with the New York Rangers. St. Louis will generate interest from teams who are exploring inexpensive options. But with his desire to be close to his family, and cap management being paramount for contending teams, it’s possible that circumstance could push St. Louis out of the league.
Sportsnet: Eric Engels speculates over which players the Montreal Canadiens could trade to free up salary-cap space. Engels suggests Tom Gilbert (who has a year left on his contract at $2.8 million) or Alexei Emelin (three years left, $4.1 million cap hit) as potential trade candidates. Forwards could include Tomas Plekanec (one year left, $5 million cap hit), David Desharnais (two years left, $3.5 million cap hit) or Lars Eller (three years left, $3.5 million).
