The biggest NHL News today is beginning to look less like a quiet August news cycle and more like a preview of what could become a chaotic September.
The NHL’s expansion plans in Texas appear to be moving forward, with Houston still considered the leading candidate over Austin for a potential 33rd franchise. Meanwhile, one of the summer’s biggest unresolved NHL trade rumors refuses to disappear: Connor Hellebuyck remains with the Winnipeg Jets, but there is growing reason to believe his situation could become a major storyline again once players begin returning for training camp.
Then there is the contract market. A major CBA deadline is coming Sept. 15, after which teams will no longer be able to re-sign their own players for eight years. That puts additional attention on several unsigned or extension-eligible stars, including Cutter Gauthier, Adam Fantilli, Cale Makar and Quinn Hughes. Nikita Kucherov’s next contract is another fascinating situation after his remarkable 130-point Hart Trophy season.
There may not have been a blockbuster trade Sunday morning, but the NHL is building toward several decisions capable of changing the league.
Latest NHL News and Rumors for August 23, 2026
The most significant league-wide development is the NHL’s continued push toward Texas.
Reuters reported that billionaire Dan Friedkin’s Pursuit Sports has agreed to a $2 billion expansion fee as part of an effort to bring the NHL’s 33rd franchise to Houston or Austin. The proposal still requires approval from the NHL Board of Governors and an arena solution, so this should not be treated as a completed expansion deal.
However, Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly made the direction clear when he said, “We’re moving forward in Texas.”
Houston currently appears to have the advantage, although Austin remains under consideration. The potential timeline would have the new franchise beginning play as early as the 2029-30 NHL season. Discussions surrounding a possible 34th franchise are also continuing, with Phoenix and Atlanta among the markets being discussed.
From my perspective, Houston makes considerably more sense if the league wants the safer expansion play. It offers an enormous corporate market, established major-league infrastructure and a much clearer path toward supporting an NHL organization. Austin is intriguing because the NHL could establish itself before the NFL, NBA or MLB enters the market, similar to what happened with the Vegas Golden Knights, but Houston feels closer to an NHL-ready market today.
Connor Hellebuyck Trade Rumors Could Get Loud Again
Connor Hellebuyck remains the name I would monitor most closely as September approaches.
Sportsnet noted that a Hellebuyck trade appeared almost imminent roughly two months ago, only for negotiations to go quiet. Elliotte Friedman has suggested the situation could gain momentum closer to training camp.
The 33-year-old is entering the third season of his seven-year contract carrying an $8.5 million average annual value. He remains one of hockey’s elite goaltenders and a three-time Vezina Trophy winner.
Jets defenceman Josh Morrissey has publicly made his preference obvious, saying: “I hope Helle is back playing for us. He’s the best goalie in the world.”
An important update to earlier reporting is that the summer expectation of an imminent trade has not proved accurate so far. Hellebuyck remains a Winnipeg Jet as of August 23. Winnipeg reportedly worked on a deal involving the Buffalo Sabres before the NHL Draft, but those discussions did not produce a trade.
My read is that Winnipeg does not need to move Hellebuyck simply because his name entered the rumor mill. The Jets can legitimately enter camp with him as their starter. But an elite goalie under long-term control could become extremely valuable if another contender becomes uncomfortable with its goaltending situation.

The September 15 Contract Deadline Could Trigger NHL Moves
Another piece of NHL News worth monitoring is the approaching contract deadline created by the league’s new CBA.
Beginning Sept. 16, maximum contract terms fall from eight years to seven for players re-signing with their existing clubs, while external unrestricted free-agent contracts will have a six-year maximum instead of seven.
That makes the next few weeks especially interesting.
Cutter Gauthier remains unsigned in Anaheim, while Adam Fantilli, Simon Edvinsson and Alexander Nikishin are also notable RFAs without new contracts. Cale Makar and Quinn Hughes are among the superstar players who could potentially benefit from getting long-term extension business completed before the rules change.
I would expect the deadline to create urgency, but not necessarily a flood of eight-year agreements. Young stars increasingly have an incentive to take shorter contracts because of how quickly the NHL salary cap is rising.
Nikita Kucherov’s Next Contract Could Reset the Veteran Market
The Tampa Bay Lightning also have one of the league’s most interesting future cap decisions.
Kucherov produced 130 points in 2025-26, won the Hart Trophy and is entering the final season of his current contract at a $9.5 million AAV. He is now eligible for an extension. Sportsnet identified Leon Draisaitl’s $14 million salary as a potential comparison while noting that Kucherov has outproduced Draisaitl over the past three seasons.
The NHL’s confirmed 2026-27 salary-cap ceiling is $104 million, while the previously projected 2027-28 ceiling is $113.5 million.
Here is my own cap analysis. These are scenarios, not predictions of Kucherov’s eventual contract:
My expectation is that Tampa will prioritize keeping Kucherov, but the harder negotiation could be term rather than talent. Paying an MVP-level player like one is easy to justify. Deciding how many seasons to commit to a player entering his mid-30s is considerably harder.
What Today’s NHL News Means Heading Toward Training Camp
The common thread running through today’s NHL news is that the league is sitting on several unresolved situations.
Hellebuyck could still become the biggest goalie available on the trade market. The Sept. 15 contract deadline could accelerate negotiations. Kucherov represents another test of the NHL’s rapidly changing salary structure. And Texas could be only a few months away from officially landing the league’s 33rd franchise.
August may traditionally be hockey’s quietest month, but this year the decisions being made behind the scenes could have consequences extending well beyond the 2026-27 season.
