The Toronto Maple Leafs finally have their first victory of the 2026-27 season, but what happened away from the ice Wednesday may ultimately prove even more important.
Easton Cowan scored and added an assist, Anthony Stolarz stopped 26 shots and Toronto defeated the New York Islanders 2-1, giving Jim Hiller his first victory as Maple Leafs head coach. Cowan helped create Colton Sissons’ opening goal before scoring on the power play himself, giving Toronto the kind of secondary offence it badly needs from its younger forwards.
At almost the same time, Toronto was manipulating its salary-cap picture. Sportsnet reported that Max Domi and Dakota Joshua were placed on LTIR Wednesday, increasing the Maple Leafs’ available cap flexibility to roughly $7 million. Newly acquired Elvis Merzlikins and Cade Webber had previously been placed on LTIR as well.
That combination makes Toronto today’s most interesting NHL story for me.
A win stabilizes the immediate conversation. Seven million dollars of usable LTIR flexibility raises a much bigger question:
What does general manager John Chayka do next?
NHL News and NHL Rumors: Toronto’s Next Move Comes Into Focus
Toronto’s 2-1 victory wasn’t spectacular, but it was exactly the kind of game this roster needed after dropping its opener to Montreal.
Cowan was particularly encouraging. He’s beginning his second full NHL season after posting 29 points in 66 games as a rookie, and Toronto needs his offensive growth after dramatically reshaping its roster around Auston Matthews, William Nylander, Gavin McKenna and newly acquired Kirill Marchenko.
My observation from these first two games is that Toronto doesn’t necessarily need another headline-grabbing scorer right now. The bigger opportunity might be using its newfound cap flexibility to improve roster balance.
That could mean another defenceman, additional centre depth or simply maintaining flexibility until an early-season trade market develops.
The important distinction is that LTIR relief is not the same thing as normal banked salary-cap space. Toronto can’t simply treat the $7 million like money sitting in a savings account. But it does give Chayka significantly more operating room than he appeared to have several days ago.

That gives this Maple Leafs story a second layer beyond simply reporting Wednesday’s final score.
Toronto won a hockey game. More importantly for the weeks ahead, it may have quietly positioned itself to make another roster move.
Connor Hellebuyck-to-Oilers Talk Has a Major Cap Problem
The biggest NHL rumor developing Thursday involves Connor Hellebuyck, although Edmonton should still be viewed as a hypothetical destination rather than an active reported pursuit.
Sportsnet reported that Hellebuyck’s preference remains to continue his career south of the Canadian border and that none of Canada’s other six clubs had made an overture to Winnipeg as of Thursday morning. However, an NHL executive raised the question of whether Edmonton’s goaltending situation could eventually force the Oilers to investigate Hellebuyck’s availability.
Tristan Jarry allowed six goals in Edmonton’s opener. Sportsnet notes it was the 10th time in his past 12 Oilers appearances that he surrendered at least four.
But the cap mathematics are ugly.
We list Edmonton with approximately $303,334 in current projected cap space. Jarry carries a $5.375 million cap hit while Hellebuyck carries an $8.5 million hit.
Here’s the NHLTradeRumor.com cap calculation:
$8.500M Hellebuyck − $5.375M Jarry = $3.125M additional cap hit
Subtract Edmonton’s current $303,334 of space and the Oilers would still need to create roughly:
$2.82 million in additional room.
And that’s before accounting for the actual trade return, roster construction or Jarry’s trade protection.

My read: Edmonton makes sense from a hockey standpoint and remains extremely difficult from both a cap and trade standpoint. Sportsnet itself characterized the possibility of Hellebuyck returning to play for another Canadian club as a significant long shot.
Dylan Larkin, Simon Edvinsson Add More Uncertainty in Detroit
Detroit’s offseason drama has spilled directly into opening week.
Simon Edvinsson remained unsigned Thursday, one day before the Red Wings’ opener, while Dylan Larkin’s trade situation remains unresolved. Larkin requested a trade during the offseason and Detroit subsequently removed him as captain.
There is now an injury complication as well. Larkin is expected to miss Detroit’s first two regular-season games because of the upper-body injury that affected him throughout camp.
That does not necessarily prevent Detroit from eventually trading him, but it removes any immediate opportunity for Larkin to re-establish himself on the ice while negotiations continue.
Elsewhere, Alex Ovechkin says he expects to play Friday in Washington’s opener against defending Stanley Cup champion Carolina after missing the entire preseason with a lower-body injury. The 41-year-old enters the year with an NHL-record 929 career goals.
Buffalo expects Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen to start Thursday after his preseason injury. Dallas considers Matt Duchene doubtful for Friday, while St. Louis defenseman Tyler Tucker underwent knee surgery and will be re-evaluated in six weeks.
Buffalo also signed 6-foot-8 defenseman Louis Crevier to a four-year, $16 million extension Thursday.
And tonight’s schedule includes Macklin Celebrini’s first game as San Jose Sharks captain, Edmonton’s rematch with Vancouver and Jack Hughes opening the season with New Jersey.
NHL Scores From Wednesday, September 30
There were three games Wednesday:
Pittsburgh produced the most decisive result. Nicholas Robertson scored twice in his Penguins debut and Arturs Silovs stopped 19 shots in a 7-0 shutout of Philadelphia. Filip Hallander added a goal and two assists.
Colorado’s offence was almost as explosive. Nathan MacKinnon and Artturi Lehkonen scored twice apiece and Brock Nelson recorded three points in the Avalanche’s 8-4 win over Los Angeles.
