From Connor McDavid leading the Oilers through a dynamic retool to the shocking return of Mats Sundin to the Maple Leafs' front office, yesterday's NHL news and NHL scores were packed with surprises.

The 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs are in full swing, and while the action on the ice is heating up, the NHL news off the ice is just as explosive. From blockbuster front-office shakeups in Toronto to massive trade rumors brewing in Edmonton, the landscape of the league is shifting rapidly today. Whether you are tracking the latest moves or catching up on yesterday’s NHL news and NHL scores, here is Bill’s Take on the biggest storylines across the league.

Toronto Maple Leafs Usher in a New Era

The Toronto Maple Leafs have made a massive splash following a disappointing season, completely overhauling their front office. In a move that has sent shockwaves through the hockey world, the Leafs have officially hired franchise legend Mats Sundin as Senior Executive Advisor of Hockey Operations, alongside new General Manager John Chayka.

This new leadership duo is tasked with righting the ship, and their first order of business will be addressing the head coaching position. The rumor mill is already churning, with former Seattle Kraken assistant coach Jessica Campbell emerging as a prime candidate. If hired, Campbell would make history as the first female head coach in NHL history. Toronto fans are desperate for a fresh voice, and this could be the bold direction the new management group takes.

Edmonton Oilers Face Major Offseason Decisions

Speaking of massive shakeups, the Edmonton Oilers are facing a critical offseason after a tough first-round playoff exit to the Anaheim Ducks. General Manager Stan Bowman is looking closely at the roster to find ways to build better scoring depth behind Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl.

One of the biggest names swirling in NHL trade rumors is veteran defenseman Darnell Nurse. With a heavy $9.25 million cap hit running through 2029-30, moving Nurse would provide the Oilers with much-needed salary cap flexibility. However, under the updated 2025-26 NHL CBA regulations, teams can no longer execute a “double retention” trade. This means any potential deal involving Nurse just became significantly harder to broker, as a single third-party broker cannot wash the salary twice to lower the cap hit for an acquiring team. Bowman will have to get highly creative if he wants to move that contract.

On the flip side, the Oilers are heavily linked to St. Louis Blues winger Jordan Kyrou. The 27-year-old forward could be the exact type of scoring threat Edmonton needs to solidify their top-six forwards, but prying him away from St. Louis will require a massive trade package.

Ridly Greig Suspended Following Game 4 Altercation

In disciplinary news, Ottawa Senators forward Ridly Greig has been handed a two-game regular-season suspension by NHL Player Safety. The suspension stems from a heated altercation with Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Sean Walker during Game 4 of their playoff series. Greig entered a late-game scrum and threw a gloved punch at Walker, crossing the line in the eyes of the league. He will serve the suspension at the start of the 2026-27 regular season.
