Could a two-time Stanley Cup champion be the rugged leader the Montreal Canadiens have been searching for? According to NHL Insider Pierre LeBrun, the Habs have their sights set on Calgary Flames forward Blake Coleman.
LeBrun reports that Coleman is “pretty high up on the list” for Montreal as they assemble their trade targets ahead of the March 6th deadline. The connection makes perfect sense on paper: Coleman brings exactly what the Canadiens are currently lacking—physicality, versatility, and championship pedigree.
While conversations between the Flames and Canadiens have occurred, a deal isn’t expected to happen immediately. Both teams are reportedly waiting until the Olympic break to assess their standings and health. Furthermore, Coleman holds a modified no-trade clause, meaning he controls his destiny for about two-thirds of the league. If Calgary makes him available, expect Montreal to be at the front of the line, but they likely won’t be the only suitor.
Why Coleman Makes Sense for the Habs
From my perspective, this potential acquisition signals a shift in Montreal’s strategy. We know they have the young talent—Caufield, Slafkovsky, Demidov, and company can score—but they often lack the “sandpaper” required to play meaningful hockey in late spring. Blake Coleman is the definition of a culture setter.
Having watched Coleman during his runs with Tampa Bay, he isn’t just a grinder; he’s a player who drags his teammates into the fight. He kills penalties, hits everything that moves, and scores clutch goals. For a young Montreal core, bringing in a guy who knows exactly what it takes to win sixteen playoff games is invaluable.
Will Coleman Waive His NTC for Montreal?
The biggest obstacle here is Coleman’s contract status. As LeBrun noted, he has a modified no-trade clause. Would a veteran looking for another ring agree to go to a team that is still in the “building” phase, or would he hold out for a guaranteed contender?
Additionally, the Calgary Flames aren’t exactly throwing in the towel. Despite their fluctuations in the standings, they are still competing. If they stay in the wildcard hunt, GM Craig Conroy might be hesitant to move one of his most reliable leaders. However, if the wheels fall off in Calgary before the Olympic break, the “For Sale” sign will go up, and the price for Coleman—likely a high draft pick or a solid prospect—will be set.
The Verdict
I believe the Canadiens should make this move if the price is right. You can’t draft experience. If Montreal wants to take the next step from “promising young team” to “playoff menace,” they need players like Blake Coleman to show them the way.
