With Shea Weber's career likely over trading for a top four defenseman for the long term should be a target for the Montreal Canadiens.

The Montreal Canadiens would like to add a top-four defenceman to the team and the only way they are going to find a replacement for Shea Weber is to trade for one.

Mike Zeisberger of NHL.com reports Habs general manager Marc Bergevin said Weber’s career could be over, so finding a top four defenseman for the long term should be a target. David Savard, Jeff Petry, Ben Chiarot and Joel Edmundson could be the top four to start the season, and Alexander Romanov will be expected to take the next step in his second NHL season.

With most top free agent defenceman signed and dman like Darnell Nurse, Zach Werenski, Seth Jones off the NHL trade rumor market and re-signed to long-term deals, Montreal will have to trade for one or wait till next off-season and maybe look at some free agent options like Morgan Reilly.

The Habs projected defensive line-up for the 2021-22 season looks as follow:

Joel Edmundson — Jeff Petry

Alexander Romanov — David Savard

Ben Chiarot — Chris Wideman
