Picture of Jeff Petry. Will the Montreal Canadiens trade the defenseman?
The latest NHL trade rumors for the Montreal Canadiens feature the team looking to trade defenseman Jeff Petry.

With the Montreal Canadiens involved in the blockbuster trade that brought Erik Karlsson to the Pittsburgh Penguins and Jeff Petry back to the Habs, are there more moves in the Canadiens future?

NHL trade rumors are starting to make the rounds that GM Kent Hughes will now flip Petry for additional prospects or draft picks.

Will the Montreal Canadiens trade Jeff Petry?

Jeff Petry, 35, is a big right-shot defenseman who is under contract for two more seasons with a salary cap hit of $6,250,000. With Petry coming to the Montreal Canadiens from the Penguins, the Pens retained $1,562,500 of his salary. His salary cap hit is now only $4,687,500 which makes him more tradable.

NHL trade rumors and Sportsnet’s Eric Engels feel the Habs will attempt to trade Petry before the NHL season starts.

Petry does own a 15-team no-trade clause but he could completely waive that if he is moved to a playoff-contending team.

Engel went on to say in his online piece that he feels the Montreal Canadiens will retain 50% of Petry’s $4,6,87,500 salary cap hit to maximize the draft capital or prospects the Habs would get back in a Petry trade.

What are Montreal Canadiens fans saying about a Jeff Petry trade?

Hughes did an amazing job of fleecing Kyle Dubas. Now we will flip Jeff Petry for some top-end assets.

I would suggest not to play a game of poker with Kent Hughes. Great trade for Petry and now he will be flipped for additional assets.

I may be in the minority but I think the Habs should keep Jeff Petry to help mentor the young team.
