Anaheim Ducks center Mason McTavish in action during an NHL game amid trade rumors involving the Montreal Canadiens
Mason McTavish rumors heat up as the Montreal Canadiens explore trade or offer sheet options to land the Ducks center as a second-line anchor.

With playoff aspirations intensifying for next season, the Montreal Canadiens are reportedly setting their sights on a game-changing acquisition to shore up their second-line center spot. According to Habs insider Pat Hickey of The Montreal Gazette, Mason McTavish rumors are gaining traction in Montreal’s front office, with the 22-year-old Anaheim Ducks center being viewed as a prime offseason target.

McTavish, known for his gritty style, puck protection, and proficiency at the faceoff dot, fits exactly what the Canadiens need down the middle. At 6-foot-1 and over 210 pounds, he brings size and presence, something the Habs lack behind top pivot Nick Suzuki. With Montreal hoping to build on last season’s surprising playoff berth, acquiring McTavish could be the difference between bubble status and serious contention.

Could the Canadiens Offer Sheet or Trade for Mason McTavish This Summer?

One speculative path involves the Canadiens submitting an NHL offer sheet, though that route is complex. Anaheim has cap flexibility and could easily match a deal. However, it’s worth noting that Cutter Gauthier, who the Ducks acquired in a blockbuster deal for Jamie Drysdale, is a natural center and could be promoted to full-time second-line duty. If that happens, McTavish may become expendable—or at least, more available via trade.

From a trade standpoint, Kent Hughes would likely have to part with a premium asset. Anaheim’s GM Pat Verbeek won’t let a young center like McTavish go for a package that doesn’t include a high-end prospect or a top draft pick. Think Michael Hage, David Reinbacher, or one of Montreal’s two 2025 first-rounders.

My Take: This is exactly the kind of calculated risk Montreal should pursue. McTavish is still on the upswing of his career arc and is ready to play a bigger role—something the Canadiens can offer right away. If Anaheim shows any willingness to engage, Hughes should be aggressive.
