The Toronto Maple Leafs find themselves in a familiar position – cap trouble. With a roster brimming with offensive talent, something has to give. According to NHL insider Darren Dreger, that “something” might be veteran forward Calle Jarnkrok.
Speaking on TSN Radio 1050, Dreger indicated that Leafs GM Brad Treliving is actively exploring trade options for Jarnkrok, who is currently sidelined with an injury. The 33-year-old winger carries a cap hit of $2.1 million through the 2025-26 season, a figure the Leafs are eager to shed as they navigate a tight salary cap situation.
Salary Cap Crunch Forces Treliving’s Hand
“Treliving is in a tough spot,” Dreger explained. “He’s got a surplus of forwards, and Jarnkrok’s contract, while not exorbitant, is one they could move to create some much-needed flexibility.”
Jarnkrok’s versatility and experience make him an attractive trade chip for contending teams seeking depth scoring. However, his age and recent injury history might necessitate the Leafs including a sweetener to facilitate a deal.
This isn’t the first time Jarnkrok’s name has surfaced in trade rumors. He was reportedly almost dealt at last year’s deadline, and with the Leafs’ cap constraints showing no signs of easing, a move seems inevitable.
