The Toronto Maple Leafs announced they have signed a seven-year, $31.5 million extension for defenceman Nikita Zaitsev.
Zaitsev, 25, had four goals and 32 assists in 82 games over his rookie season with the team. His 36 points were second among Leafs rearguards.
The native of Moscow appeared in four games for the Leafs during the playoffs, missing the first two contests with the Washington Capitals after incurring an upper-body injury during the team’s final regular season game with the Columbus Blue Jackets.
