As the NHL offseason chatter heats up, one intriguing situation is brewing in the Boston Bruins’ crease, involving backup goalie Joonas Korpisalo. Fresh off recent speculation surrounding Jeremy Swayman’s availability on the trade market, sources now indicate Korpisalo himself could be ready to request a trade out of Boston, frustrated with his limited role on the team.
Boston Bruins insider James Murphy dropped the bombshell, revealing that Korpisalo’s agent, Markus Lehto, has laid down a clear ultimatum to Bruins General Manager Don Sweeney: either give Korpisalo more starts next season or find a new home for him.
Why Does Joonas Korpisalo Want a Trade from the Bruins?
Korpisalo’s dissatisfaction stems from his drastically reduced playing time during the 2024-25 NHL season. After joining Boston via the Linus Ullmark trade from Ottawa last summer, the Finnish netminder started only 24 games, compared to the 49 starts he had the previous year with the Senators. Clearly, this substantial reduction in ice time did not sit well with the veteran goalie.
During his end-of-season media availability, Korpisalo hinted at his frustrations: “I don’t think there’s any goalie in the league who’s really comfortable playing 20 to 25 games. So I’m going to push for more games, and we’ll see what happens.” This statement alone made it abundantly clear that the 31-year-old is eager to secure a more prominent role, whether with the Bruins or elsewhere.
Korpisalo’s performance this past season yielded mixed results, as he recorded an .893 save percentage and a 2.90 goals-against average, compiling an 11-10-3 record. Despite these middling numbers, NHL executives reportedly remain interested. “I’m hearing his name out there more and more,” one NHL executive confirmed to Murphy, adding, “He’s not happy and thinks he earned more playing time. He’s more than open to exploring trade options.”
Murphy further detailed, quoting another trusted NHL source, that multiple teams have indeed already made calls to the Bruins about Korpisalo’s availability. While no specific teams have emerged as frontrunners yet, the level of interest suggests a potential market developing swiftly around the Finnish netminder.
Ultimately, Korpisalo’s future hinges on whether Boston commits to a greater role for him in the crease. If they can’t, expect Korpisalo trade rumors to gain significant momentum over the coming months.
