Ottawa Senators' Jakob Chychrun linked to Winnipeg Jets in potential blockbuster. We break down why Nikolaj Ehlers could be the key.

The NHL trade rumor mill never sleeps, and lately, a name that’s been popping up consistently is Ottawa Senators defenseman Jakob Chychrun. The talented blueliner has been the subject of trade speculation for what feels like ages, and it seems like a move could finally be on the horizon. One team that consistently comes up as a potential destination is the Winnipeg Jets. Could a blockbuster be brewing involving a Chychrun for Nikolaj Ehlers swap?

Could Jakob Chychrun Be Winnipeg’s Missing Piece?

1. The Jets Need Defensive Help

It’s no secret that the Winnipeg Jets have a glaring need to bolster their defense corps. While they boast a high-powered offense, their defensive play has often left a lot to be desired. Jakob Chychrun would be a massive upgrade, bringing size, skill, and a two-way presence to Winnipeg’s blue line.

2. Ehlers May Be Expendable

With the Jets’ abundance of offensive firepower, Nikolaj Ehlers might become a luxury they can’t afford. Ehlers is a dynamic winger, but if the Jets are serious about addressing their defensive woes, sacrificing some offense for a top-tier defenseman could be a calculated risk they’re willing to take.

3. The Contract Conundrum

Jakob Chychrun’s contract is incredibly team-friendly, with one more seasons at a $4.6 million AAV. However, he’ll be looking for a substantial raise when that deal expires. The Jets would only make this move if they are confident in securing Chychrun long-term.

  1. Why is Ottawa trading Chychryn if he has such a good contract? …they just acquired him. Is Ehlers worth more? I think Ehlers had a bad year because he was jerked around a lot and lost his confidence. Maybe for his sake, he should go elsewhere where he will flourish. I hate to see him go.
