The Montreal Canadiens are no longer content with missing the playoffs. After years of rebuilding, the team is looking to solidify itself as a perennial playoff contender. Habs insider Eric Engels has reported that general manager Kent Hughes will aggressively pursue a second-line center this offseason to complement Patrik Laine and Alex Newhook.
With captain Nick Suzuki emerging as an elite two-way center and sniper Cole Caufield locked in long-term, the Canadiens don’t want to miss their opportunity to build a competitive roster while their core is in its prime. Suzuki, 25, has five years left on his contract at a reasonable $7.875 million AAV, while the 24-year-old Caufield is secured for six more years at just under Suzuki’s cap hit.
Who Could the Habs Trade for This Offseason?
Trevor Zegras
Montreal has been linked to Trevor Zegras for over a year, and this summer might be the time a deal finally happens. The 23-year-old playmaker has all the tools to thrive in a fast-paced offense and would complement Montreal’s top-six perfectly. Zegras has struggled in Anaheim and could benefit from a fresh start. His skill set meshes well with Newhook and Laine, giving the Canadiens a dynamic second-line trio capable of producing significant offense.
Clayton Keller
Clayton Keller has quietly been one of the most underrated forwards in the NHL, putting up impressive numbers despite playing for the Arizona Coyotes—now the Utah Hockey Club. At 26 years old, Keller is in his prime and would fit seamlessly into the Canadiens’ system. If Montreal wants to go big-game hunting, offering a first-round pick and a top prospect for Keller could be worth it. His elite playmaking and goal-scoring ability would make the Habs an immediate playoff threat.
What Do the Habs Have to Offer in a Trade?
The Canadiens boast substantial trade assets, including two first-round picks and two second-round selections in the upcoming 2025 NHL Draft. Additionally, they have a deep prospect pool featuring names like Logan Mailloux and Michael Hage. With ample salary cap space available, the Habs are well-positioned to acquire either Zegras or Keller without financial strain.
If Hughes plays his cards right, Montreal could land a high-impact player that helps them not only secure a playoff spot next season but also build a sustainable contender for years to come.
