The Dylan Larkin trade rumors have gone surprisingly quiet, but that may be about to change. The Detroit Red Wings are moving deeper into their search for a new general manager, and whoever takes control of hockey operations will inherit one enormous decision almost immediately: what happens with the captain?
Larkin’s trade request is no longer speculation. Former Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman publicly confirmed in June that Larkin’s agent, Pat Brisson, informed Detroit that the centre wanted to be traded. Larkin also controls the process through his no-trade protection, with Minnesota, Florida and Vegas reported as his three preferred destinations.
Now there is a new wrinkle. Elliotte Friedman reported that Detroit’s GM search is well underway, with internal and external candidates being considered. Why the Detroit Red Wings GM Search Changes the Dylan Larkin Trade Rumors
Detroit’s search has become much more concrete.
Friedman discussed internal candidates Shawn Horcoff and Kris Draper while also pointing toward Florida Panthers assistant GM Brett Peterson and San Jose Sharks assistant GM Jeff Kealty. Detroit Tigers general manager Jeff Greenberg continues to be one of the more intriguing names associated with the position.
That matters enormously to the Larkin situation.
A new general manager isn’t emotionally tied to the decisions that created the current roster. He may evaluate Larkin’s value, Detroit’s competitive window and the organization’s young core differently.
That’s why I wouldn’t view Detroit’s GM search and the Larkin trade request as separate stories anymore.
They are connected.
My read is that the next GM’s first major decision could very well become the defining transaction of his tenure.
Larkin is coming off an excellent 2025-26 season in which he recorded 34 goals and 33 assists for 67 points in 74 games. He’s a legitimate first-line NHL centre who can play in every situation, and that alone prevents Detroit from treating this as a typical disgruntled-player trade.
He’s also signed through 2030-31 at an $8.7 million cap hit. On the NHL’s $104 million salary ceiling for 2026-27, Larkin consumes only about 8.37 percent of the cap. For a productive No. 1 centre, that’s an attractive number.
Dylan Larkin’s Contract Gives Detroit More Leverage Than You Might Think
This is where the Dylan Larkin situation becomes particularly interesting. Detroit isn’t dealing with an expiring contract. Larkin has five seasons remaining, meaning the Red Wings aren’t facing a “trade him now or lose him for nothing” scenario.
His no-trade clause certainly reduces Detroit’s leverage because Larkin controls which destination can acquire him. But his contract term gives the organization something equally important: time.
PuckPedia lists Larkin’s $8.7 million cap hit through 2030-31 and a full no-trade clause through 2027-28 before it converts to modified protection.
That makes waiting a legitimate strategy.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Detroit’s next GM meets directly with Larkin and Brisson before seriously entertaining another trade proposal. A new management regime gives both sides an opportunity to reset the relationship.
But if Larkin remains committed to leaving, the pressure shifts immediately to finding a trade that actually improves the Red Wings.
Detroit Red Wings Salary Cap Impact
PuckPedia currently projects Detroit at approximately $84.43 million in cap commitments, leaving roughly $19.57 million below the $104 million ceiling.
Here’s where things get interesting:

It’s only a snapshot, subsequent roster moves, recalls, bonuses and incoming salary could change the calculation, but it illustrates another reason a futures-only package doesn’t make much sense for Detroit.
The Red Wings should want real NHL salary and real NHL talent coming back.

What Would It Take for the Red Wings to Actually Trade Larkin?
That’s the million-dollar question. Earlier reporting indicated Detroit wasn’t interested in simply collecting draft picks and prospects. The Red Wings want players who can help them now, which is exactly how I would approach negotiations if I were sitting in Detroit’s GM chair.
The Red Wings have spent too many seasons rebuilding to trade their best centre for assets that might become NHL players three or four years from now.
Minnesota remains the destination I would watch most closely.
The Wild were among Larkin’s reported approved teams, while Florida and Vegas have their own roster and cap complications. Larkin’s full no-trade clause means Detroit can’t manufacture a 10-team bidding war unless the player changes his position.
That’s the biggest obstacle to a blockbuster.
Detroit has the player everyone wants. Larkin controls who can actually acquire him. And the next Detroit Red Wings general manager will be stuck trying to reconcile those two realities.
An Earlier Dylan Larkin Report Has Already Been Confirmed
This is important when separating NHL trade rumors from confirmed information.
Friedman originally reported Larkin’s trade request in early June. That portion of the story was subsequently confirmed publicly by Yzerman, who said Larkin’s agent contacted him after the season to request a trade. NHL.com also reported that Detroit received a short list of teams for which Larkin would waive his protection.
What has not been confirmed is that a Larkin trade is imminent.
That’s the distinction I would emphasize.
The GM search isn’t proof that Larkin is about to be moved. It’s the development that could finally give Detroit a decision-maker empowered to resolve the situation.
And that makes the next few weeks fascinating.
