The Dylan Larkin trade rumors suddenly look much more interesting for the Detroit Red Wings.
For months, Detroit appeared to be negotiating from a difficult position. Larkin had requested a trade, but his full no-movement clause reportedly limited the Red Wings to only three approved destinations: the Minnesota Wild, Florida Panthers and Vegas Golden Knights. That gave Larkin enormous control over where he could go and potentially limited the bidding market available to Detroit.
Now that equation may have changed.
Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported that Larkin could be willing to accept a trade to roughly eight NHL teams, with Colorado and Washington mentioned as additional possibilities and Dallas and Tampa Bay also suspected to be part of the expanded group.
That does not mean a Dylan Larkin trade is suddenly close.
But in my view, it may be the most important development in the Larkin situation since his original trade request became public. The Detroit Red Wings may finally have enough potential destinations to create something they previously lacked: competition for Larkin.
Why Dylan Larkin Expanding His Trade List Matters for the Detroit Red Wings
This is ultimately a leverage story.
Back in July, Larkin reportedly had not expanded his approved list beyond Minnesota, Florida and Vegas, while Detroit had not received an offer it considered attractive enough to make a deal.
If Friedman’s newest information is accurate, the situation has genuinely evolved rather than simply recycling the same summer rumor.
Colorado, Washington, Dallas and Tampa Bay joining or potentially joining the conversation would dramatically change the type of market Detroit could explore.
Instead of calling three clubs and asking which one is prepared to make the best offer, the Red Wings could theoretically have seven or eight organizations trying to solve the same problem.
That’s important because Larkin is not a rental.
He carries an $8.7 million annual cap hit with five seasons remaining on the eight-year contract he signed with Detroit in 2023. He also owns a full no-movement clause, meaning Detroit cannot simply send him to the highest bidder.

Dylan Larkin’s Contract Could Make This a True NHL Blockbuster
There is another reason the expanded list matters: fitting Larkin into a contender’s salary structure will not necessarily be easy.
The NHL’s 2026-27 salary-cap ceiling is $104 million, making Larkin’s $8.7 million hit approximately 8.4 percent of the ceiling.
Detroit therefore has several possible ways of approaching a deal.
The cleanest trade would have the acquiring club absorb the entire $8.7 million. But depending on the destination, Detroit could theoretically take salary back, involve another club or retain part of Larkin’s contract in exchange for a stronger return.
That final possibility would be expensive because there are five years remaining.
This is why I don’t believe Detroit should be in a rush simply because Larkin has expanded his list.
If anything, a bigger list gives the Red Wings more reason to wait for an offer that actually reflects the value of a legitimate top-line centre.
Larkin produced 34 goals and 67 points in 74 games in 2025-26, while winning 52.9 percent of his faceoffs. He also scored 14 power-play goals.
That came after seasons of 70 points in 2024-25 and 69 points in only 68 games in 2023-24.
That consistency is why this shouldn’t be viewed as Detroit simply attempting to dump a disgruntled player.
Larkin remains productive.
NHL Network ranked him among its top 20 centres entering this season and noted that he has scored at least 30 goals in five consecutive seasons.
From my perspective, that changes the conversation around the return.
A club acquiring Larkin isn’t trading only for what he can provide this season. It is acquiring a centre who could occupy an important top-six role for several years without needing a new contract immediately.
Could More Teams Finally Trigger a Dylan Larkin Trade?
This is where the story gets fascinating.
Colorado would offer Larkin the possibility of joining an established contender. Dallas and Tampa Bay have similarly spent years operating with championship expectations. Washington represents another intriguing possibility, while Minnesota, Vegas and Florida were already connected to Larkin through the earlier reporting.
But there is a major difference between being a team Larkin would approve and being a team actively negotiating an acceptable trade with Detroit.
Those two things should not be confused.
Friedman’s report establishes a potentially larger list. It does not establish that Colorado, Washington, Dallas or Tampa Bay has submitted an offer Detroit is prepared to accept.
My read is that the most meaningful consequence isn’t necessarily that Larkin is suddenly closer to leaving Detroit. It’s that the Red Wings may have gained negotiating power.
With only three destinations, an interested general manager could reasonably believe Detroit had limited alternatives.
With roughly eight?
That leverage changes.
If two or three approved teams become serious at the same time, Detroit can compare hockey trades rather than negotiate against itself.
And that is where the possibility of a blockbuster becomes much more realistic.
The Red Wings have previously made it clear that simply having a trade request does not obligate the organization to accept an inadequate return. When the request became public, then-general manager Steve Yzerman said there were “no guarantees” Detroit would be able to satisfy it and emphasized that Larkin remained under contract for five more years.
That’s still the key.
Larkin controls his destination.
Detroit controls whether it accepts the return.
For the first time in months, the reported number of potential destinations may be large enough for both sides to eventually find common ground.
