The Calgary Flames and forward Connor Zary find themselves in a familiar late-summer dance: the restricted free agent (RFA) contract negotiation. While fans might be getting anxious as training camp looms, these situations are rarely as simple as just agreeing on a number.
For Zary, a promising but thus far enigmatic talent, this negotiation is about defining his future, while for the Flames, it’s about managing risk and potential.
Bridging the Gap or a Long-Term Bet?
From where I’m sitting, the crux of this delay boils down to a classic conflict of perspectives: term versus security. Zary and his agent are likely pushing for a long-term deal. They’ll be pointing to his flashes of high-end skill, his first-round draft pedigree, and the potential he has to become a core piece of this team’s offense. A long-term contract buys him security and a significant payday, betting on his own potential to outperform the contract’s value in its later years.
On the other side, you have the Flames’ management, who are understandably more cautious. They see a player who has battled injuries and has yet to cement a consistent role in the lineup. Is he a center or a winger? A top-six scorer or a middle-six utility player? These are multi-million dollar questions that remain unanswered. Because of this uncertainty, the Flames are almost certainly pushing for a “bridge deal”—a shorter-term contract, likely two or three years.
This type of deal acts as a “prove it” contract. It gives Zary a raise on his entry-level salary but forces him to demonstrate his true value and consistency before the team commits to a bigger, long-term investment. My money is on a bridge deal getting done, likely in the two-year range with an annual cap hit around $3 million. The player simply doesn’t have the leverage to demand a long-term deal at a high number, and missing camp would be a disastrous start to a pivotal season for his development.
