The entire NHL is watching Edmonton, and it’s not because of a winning streak. The league’s biggest story revolves around one man: Connor McDavid. His contract extension remains unsigned, and the delay is sending shockwaves through the organization and its fanbase. As an expert who’s seen these situations unfold time and again, I can tell you this is about more than just finding the right price; it’s about securing a legacy. McDavid wants to know that the Oilers are positioned to be a legitimate Stanley Cup contender for the entire duration of his next contract.
A Franchise at a Crossroads
When you look at the Oilers’ roster, you can see why he’s hesitating. The goaltending situation is, once again, a massive question mark. Can they find a consistent, elite netminder to backstop a championship run? Furthermore, the core is getting older. While rookies like the highly-touted Matt Savoie and Isaac Howard could inject some much-needed youth and skill, banking a franchise’s future on unproven talent is a risky gamble. A strong debut from these youngsters would certainly brighten the outlook, but McDavid’s decision won’t hinge on a Calder-worthy performance from a rookie.
However, I’ve heard from a trusted source that the biggest factor isn’t what’s happening on the ice, but what’s happening at home. McDavid and his wife want to start a family, and the desire to be near their own families in the Toronto area is a powerful emotional pull. Growing up, McDavid was a Toronto Maple Leafs fan. That childhood connection, combined with the logistics of family life, has created a very real possibility that he could be wearing a Maple Leafs jersey next season. This feels eerily similar to the John Tavares situation, and we all know how that ended for the Islanders. While McDavid could still choose to remain an Oiler for life, the possibility of a move to Toronto is stronger than ever.

I literally said this exact same thing a week ago. Its the only thing that makes sense. I know he loves playing in Edmonton, but if they do want kids in the near future, I think most people could agree that they would want to be closer to their family’s.
This IS WHY IMO, it would make sense to sign short term, no more than 3 years, perhaps just 2 years, he’d then be 30 or 31 and he could relocate then if he wanted to. BUT would he risk leaving asap considering how close he/we came last 2 years? It’s a chess move for sure. But that is what I’d do if in his shoes, I’d see how the season goes and if things look good, I’d sign for 2 years. People have kids now into their 30s, they are not there yet.
