The Montreal Canadiens may have another intriguing centre to add to their growing trade watch list, and this one would involve dealing directly with one of their oldest rivals.
Sportsnet’s Nick Kypreos reported that the Canadiens are among the teams keeping a close eye on Pavel Zacha, with Nashville, Columbus and Philadelphia also mentioned. The timing is significant. Zacha is entering the final season of his contract with the Boston Bruins, extension talks have yet to produce an agreement, and the 29-year-old is coming off the best offensive season of his NHL career.
That combination immediately makes this worth watching.
Zacha scored 30 goals and 65 points in 78 games last season, establishing career highs in both categories while playing a major role down the middle for Boston. He carries a $4.75 million cap hit and is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent after the 2026-27 season.
There is no report that Montreal has made an offer, and there is no indication that Boston has decided to trade him. But the Canadiens being specifically identified as a team watching the situation makes this more than a random trade proposal.
And from Montreal’s perspective, the fit is easy to understand.
Why Pavel Zacha Makes Sense for the Montreal Canadiens
The Canadiens have spent considerable time building around a young core, but the question down the middle continues to follow the organization.
Nick Suzuki gives Montreal its established top-line centre. The bigger question is how management wants to structure the position behind him as the Canadiens attempt to move deeper into their competitive window.
Zacha would offer something particularly valuable: versatility.
He can play centre or wing, contribute on the power play, take faceoffs and provide legitimate top-six offence. At 6-foot-4, he also gives Montreal size without forcing the Canadiens to sacrifice skill.
His 2025-26 season deserves attention as well.
Zacha finished with 30 goals and 35 assists for 65 points in 78 games. Boston’s own season review noted that his 65 points ranked third on the Bruins and his 30 goals ranked second.

The important question is whether those 30 goals represent a sustainable new level.
Zacha shot 22.9 percent last season, considerably higher than the 10.6 percent he posted the previous year. His production may therefore regress even if he remains a productive top-six forward. That distinction matters if Montreal is eventually considering both the trade cost and a substantial long-term contract.
From my perspective, that is the first thing Kent Hughes would have to determine. Montreal should not evaluate Zacha strictly as a 30-goal scorer. The better question is whether the Canadiens believe they would be acquiring a dependable 55-to-65-point centre who can play meaningful minutes in multiple situations.
If the answer is yes, the interest makes considerably more sense.
Boston Bruins Have a Pavel Zacha Decision to Make
This is where the trade rumor becomes particularly interesting.
Boston does not appear eager to lose Zacha.
Bruins general manager Don Sweeney acknowledged during training camp that the organization has been communicating with Zacha’s representatives. Sweeney described it as a “good dialogue” but said the sides had not found a landing spot.
Zacha subsequently confirmed that talks had been occurring and indicated that his agent was handling the negotiations while he focused on hockey.
That is important context.
This is not a player who has reportedly requested a trade, and it is not a situation where Boston has publicly decided to sell. Quite the opposite: the Bruins have said they value Zacha and would like to keep him.
Kypreos, however, identified him as a player to watch and wrote that Boston could face a choice between committing significant long-term money or seeing how its season develops. He specifically identified Montreal among the teams watching closely.
That creates the pressure point.
If Boston starts well and makes progress on an extension, this rumor could disappear quickly.
If the Bruins struggle and Zacha remains unsigned, his value on the trade market could increase considerably.

The financial side also makes a trade more complicated for Montreal than simply deciding Zacha would improve the lineup.
Montreal currently has approximately $2.784 million in cap space, while Zacha carries a $4.75 million cap hit. Acquiring his entire cap hit immediately would therefore leave Montreal approximately $1.966 million above its current available space, assuming no other roster changes.
At 50 percent salary retention, however, Zacha’s Montreal cap charge would fall to $2.375 million, leaving roughly $409,000 in space under the same simplified calculation.
Those numbers could change as the season progresses through roster transactions and daily cap accumulation, but they illustrate an important point: a Zacha deal made now would likely require retention or money moving out.
Would Montreal Actually Pay Boston’s Price for Pavel Zacha?
This may ultimately be the biggest obstacle.
Boston would have little reason to move Zacha cheaply. Centres capable of producing at a top-six level carry considerable value, and Kypreos has already identified multiple clubs monitoring him.

My NHLTradeRumor.com Trade Value Index places Zacha at 81/100 entering the season. This is an editorial model rather than an NHL valuation and is meant to measure the combination of production, positional value, cap efficiency, contractual control and reported market interest.
His current $4.75 million cap hit is extremely attractive relative to his latest production. The negative for an acquiring team is contract control: without an extension, Montreal could potentially be paying a meaningful acquisition price for one guaranteed season.
That should matter enormously to Hughes.
If Montreal ever became serious about Zacha, I would expect the Canadiens to investigate the likelihood of an extension before surrendering premium assets. A trade without confidence in a new contract would change the value equation.
There is another complication: Boston and Montreal are Atlantic Division rivals.
The Bruins would have to be comfortable strengthening a team they could be battling for playoff positioning for years. Montreal, meanwhile, would have to determine whether Boston’s divisional premium makes another centre elsewhere more attractive.
That is why I would not interpret today’s report as evidence a Zacha trade is close.
It is evidence that Montreal is watching.
My Read on the Pavel Zacha–Canadiens Rumor
I think this is one of the more logical Canadiens centre rumors because Zacha checks several boxes Montreal could reasonably prioritize: size, versatility, experience, faceoff ability and proven top-six production.
I am less convinced Montreal should aggressively chase him at any price.
Zacha’s 30-goal season was excellent, but the elevated shooting percentage is something I would factor heavily into the evaluation. The Canadiens need to determine what they believe the player will be over the next four or five seasons rather than paying based entirely on one career year.
There is also no need for Montreal to force a deal today.
Boston’s contract negotiations are the real pressure point. If Zacha signs an extension, the story essentially ends. If talks remain unresolved and Boston does not start the season the way it wants, the Canadiens could suddenly have considerably more leverage—or considerably more competition.
For now, Montreal’s reported interest is worth tracking because there is an identifiable player, an unresolved contract situation and a logical roster fit.
The next development to watch is not a mock trade package.
It is whether Pavel Zacha and the Boston Bruins can finally agree on a new contract.
