The NHL trade winds are swirling with a sensational rumor that could reshape the St. Louis Blues and Montreal Canadiens. NHL trade rumors indicate that the Habs and Blues are in deep discussions over a blockbuster trade. The proposed deal is substantial, involving high-profile players and promising prospects from both teams.

From Montreal’s side, the package reportedly includes power forward Josh Anderson, along with prospects Lane Hutson and Filip Mesar, a 2024 2nd round draft pick (originally from the Colorado Avalanche), and a 2025 1st round draft pick (from the Calgary Flames).

In return, the St. Louis Blues are poised to send forward Pavel Buchnevich, a proven 30-goal scorer, and Jake Neighbours, a rising star with immense potential.

Breaking Down the Canadiens-Blues Potential Mega-Trade

This trade makes strategic sense for both teams, given their respective situations and needs. For the Montreal Canadiens, this move would significantly bolster their offensive firepower. With Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Juraj Slafkovsky forming a formidable second line, the addition of Buchnevich and Neighbors could create a dynamic first line, centered by Kirby Dach. This reshuffling also allows Alex Newhook to slot in as the third-line center, a role where he can thrive without the pressure of being a top-line contributor.

Another key aspect of this trade is the financial flexibility it provides the Canadiens. Offloading Josh Anderson’s $5.5 million AAV (average annual value) over the next three seasons can free up valuable Habs salary cap space, allowing for additional moves to strengthen the team in other areas.

From the Blues’ perspective, acquiring Anderson adds a physical presence and scoring touch to their lineup. The inclusion of prospects like Hutson and Mesar signifies a commitment to future growth, while the draft picks offer further opportunities to bolster their talent pool.

The Canadiens, with their strong defensive prospects like Logan Mailloux and David Reinbacher, are in an enviable position. Mailloux’s potential to anchor a power play only adds to the team’s depth. This proposed trade, therefore, aligns with their strategy of building a competitive team in the near term while maintaining a pipeline of young talent.

This NHL trade rumor, if it materializes, could be a win-win for both the Montreal Canadiens and St. Louis Blues. It addresses immediate needs and future considerations, demonstrating the intricate balance of team building in the NHL. Fans and NHL analysts will be eagerly watching to see if this rumor turns into reality, potentially altering the trajectory of both franchises.

  1. Buchnevich, a proven 30 goal scorer, is on a team friendly contract for next season. Neighbors is under team control for another 4 seasons and is having a breakout season. Anderson is an overpaid 3rd liner for 3 more seasons. It’s not hard to walk away from this lousy offer.

The picks need to be unprotected firsts from Habs and the prospects need to be elite if they’re going to cause a response other than hard pass on an offer with these financial considerations. Buchnevich and Neighbors will continue being superior players for as long as they bleed blue.

Blues will continue focusing on moving Scandella Kappanen Sundqvist and Blaise for 3rd round picks and listen to offers on Schenn Hayes and Saad
