The Calgary Flames have surprised many this season, currently sitting in a Wild Card position. While they’ve been active in trade rumors, particularly targeting a second-line center, one player who’s unlikely to be on the move or part of a trade package is forward Andrei Kuzmenko.
Kuzmenko’s Struggles and No-Trade Clause Hinder Potential Deal
Kuzmenko, who burst onto the scene with a 39-goal season with the Vancouver Canucks, has struggled to replicate that success in Calgary. His production has dipped significantly this year, leading to speculation about his future with the team. However, a combination of factors makes a trade unlikely.
Firstly, Kuzmenko’s 12-team no-trade clause gives him significant control over his destination. This limits the number of teams the Flames could potentially trade him to, reducing the pool of potential suitors. Secondly, his $5.5 million cap hit is a significant obstacle, as teams would likely require the Flames to retain salary to make a deal feasible.
While a trade isn’t entirely off the table, especially if the Flames fall out of playoff contention, it seems unlikely at this point. The team may prefer to hold onto Kuzmenko and hope he can regain his scoring touch, rather than dealing him for a lesser return.
