The Columbus Blue Jackets are reportedly seeking a future-focused package in exchange for disgruntled winger Patrik Laine, according to insider Aaron Portzline.
Portzline, appearing on TSN radio, revealed that the Blue Jackets are prioritizing draft picks and prospects in any potential deal for Laine, who recently requested a trade. While the 26-year-old remains in the NHL/NHLPA player assistance program, the Blue Jackets can still engage in trade discussions.
General manager Don Waddell has indicated that teams are interested in acquiring Laine, but are waiting to speak with him directly before finalizing any deal. This waiting game has prompted the Blue Jackets to shift their focus towards acquiring assets that can bolster their future rather than seeking an immediate roster upgrade.
Given their recent offseason additions, Portzline believes the Blue Jackets may not be actively pursuing a roster player in return for Laine. Instead, they could opt for a package of picks and prospects to strengthen their farm system and build for the future. Additionally, with Laine’s $8.7 million cap hit, it is likely that the Blue Jackets will need to retain a portion of his salary to facilitate a trade.
