The Chicago Blackhawks are reportedly "aggressively pursuing" Nashville Predators goalie Yaroslav Askarov. Is this trade a good fit for both teams?

The NHL offseason rumor mill is churning once again, and this time, it’s the Chicago Blackhawks making headlines. Rumors around the league suggest that the Blackhawks are “aggressively pursuing” a trade for Nashville Predators goaltender, Yaroslav Askarov.

Sources close to the Blackhawks organization have indicated that the two teams have engaged in substantial discussions regarding the young netminder.

Askarov Trade to Blackhawks: Examining the Potential Blockbuster Deal

Askarov, the 11th overall pick in the 2020 NHL Draft, is widely considered to be one of the most promising goaltending prospects in the league. Despite limited NHL experience, Askarov has flashed his immense potential in the AHL, boasting a .911 save percentage and a 2.49 goals-against average in 44 games with the Milwaukee Admirals.

The Blackhawks’ interest in Askarov is understandable. With a young core of talented forwards, including Connor Bedard, Lukas Reichel, and Artyom Levshunov, the Blackhawks are clearly building towards the future. Adding a potential franchise goaltender like Askarov would solidify their foundation and accelerate their rebuild.

However, the question remains: Is Askarov worth the price? The Predators are unlikely to part with their prized prospect without a significant return. The Blackhawks possess several valuable assets, including high draft picks and promising young players, but surrendering them for a goaltender who has yet to prove himself at the NHL level is a gamble.

Fans are divided on the potential trade. Some believe that Askarov is the missing piece that the Blackhawks need to contend for a Stanley Cup in the coming years. Others argue that the team should focus on developing their existing prospects, such as goaltender Drew Commesso, rather than sacrificing valuable assets for an unproven commodity.

The Blackhawks currently have veteran Petr Mrazek and newly signed Laurent Brossoit in their goaltending tandem. While both netminders are capable, neither is considered a long-term solution. Acquiring Askarov would give the Blackhawks a clear succession plan in net and alleviate any concerns about their goaltending future.

Ultimately, the decision rests with Blackhawks General Manager Kyle Davidson. If he believes that Askarov is the franchise goaltender that the team desperately needs, he may be willing to pay a premium price to acquire him. However, if the asking price is too high, Davidson may opt to explore other options or remain patient and continue to develop his existing prospects.
